A total noob

Hello everyone! I'm going to be purchasing my first android powered phone, the Samsung Captivate. Could anyone just tell me things I should keep in mind? (ex. charge before startup, or drain out the battery first etc. etc)

I'm new to this as well. As the phone comes out of the box are there any software or firmware patches that need to be applied?

They may be up to date at this point considering they are still running 2.1.

When I got mine about 3 months ago it had the latest software update already on it. That is until I rooted the phone and put another rom on it. Ha ha. Oh well.
