Root A2SD & Custom Roms

I've finally rooted my desire (how easy was that?) :D

I'm now looking at partitionaing my SD card as the internal memory is pants (but you knew that anyway..)

I've read through the guide, it'll make more sense when I actually start to do it, but can I partition first then download a Custom Rom (still can't decide which one) at a later date (that supports A2SD).

My initial read of the guide indicates downloading a ROM first, but mentions that you can do steps 1-4 if ROM already changed...

Thanks - sorry for noobie question!!!

Hey dude,

You can partition your card first (you should do it first more like) and then download whatever ROM you want, if the ROM doesnt support A2SD or A2SD+ you just wont have it, simple as that ;) It will not stop a ROM that doesnt support it from working. The only reason to delete the partition is more space really.

So if your going to use a rom like ReDux or something Just partition the card then install the ROM, all done.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the replys.

Another question, guide says to move all apps to internal memory. My internal memory does't have the space to move all apps there. I presume copying my SD apps back to SD card by click and drop afterwards will work?

Thanks.

Just skip it. Move them afterwards

A2sd doesn't. Partitioning it may depending how you do it. Take a titanium backup first and backup sd

Last* questions...(* = hopefully)

Re this part of the guide - ie the 'How to'?

1) Backup your SD card contents to your PC
2) Download GParted Live cd, burn to CD and boot to it GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD
I'm not understanding the 'Boot it to' - do I just run the CD that I have just burned?
3) Connect your device in Recovery mode and mount as USB mass storage

Do I do the following on the phone or on the PC - via the programme above?
What it GUI?

4) Resize the existing FAT32 partition from the back, leaving space after it and create an EXT partition in the space. Steps for the GUI are below.

In the drop down menu (top right) select the SD card (be careful not to select your HDD)
  • Right click on the FAT32 Partition and select resize
  • Press the Up arrow on "Free Space Following" until you have the desired sizes
  • Click Resize
  • right click in unallocated space and select New> EXT format of your choice
  • Click Apply
I'm probably being really techno stupid, but I like to try to know what i'm doing before I start, some of this doesn't sound to clear!

As always... thanks!!!

Your pc should at least be able to boot from cd. Usually when you turn on a pc it boots from hard drive. If it has a bootable cd in when you turn it on, it should load that instead of windows.

GUI is graphical user interface. I'm referring to the GUI of gparted

If it doesn't automatically do it, you may have to press F12 or something early in the boot to get into the boot options menu, then select CD.

However, the only Windows machines I have here are rather old and running XP, so I'm just assuming the same is true for newer PCs.

Make sure you've done your backups and then backed-up your entire card to your PC before partitioning, because it will wipe the card in the process.

Ok, we bit of help needed!!!

Got into Gparted, put my phone into Recovery and attached to PC.

On the recovery page, I hit the power button to enter 'Mount & Storage', but screen goes blank (in fact, I need to take battery out to get out of this...).

GParted only shows my computer drives, although it detected the phone during booting!

Any ideas?

lol... that always happens it just hides the menu. just press the power button again and it will come back. in the recovery menu you need to use the trackpad to select items.

Its best to take the card out and do it that way also. like with a Micro SD adapter or something. You should have got one with the phone.

So go back into recovery and use the track pad to move up and down and press it to select.

Right,

I can get into Gparted, I put the phone into Recovery and put it to 'Mass USB Storage' in the Mount SD card.

When I boot into Gparted, it doesn;t give me the option to partition my card - the top right hand corner, with the dropdown menu, only gives me the option for my PC hard-drive!!

Help...

You choose "mount usb mass storage" not "mount sd card", just to be clear.

Theres an option to refresh or scan for devices. If that fails, hit the exit X in the top corner and reload the gui from the linux desktop.

Yeah, it was mounted as usb, I did boot it then connect phone after. Will connect then boot tonight!

Thanks.

Yep connect then boot is better. Although, you have to connect half way through boot I think. the connection sometimes prevent boot.

Wait until you have selected your keyboard language etc, then connect when all the text is scrolling across the screen

Got it...

Thanks. It still wasn't showing, so I changed the USB port and re-searched Devices and it popped up.

Now my SD card shows less capacity in 'About Phone', but still has low memory. I presume this only takes effect after a custom Rom has been flashed that supports A2SD? I take it once a ROM is flashed, all apps move?

Thanks.

Depends on a ROM.
For example, if you use Gingervillain, then the built in DT script will move your apps automatically to SD-EXT partition as you install/restore apps.
