Help A500 continuous "copy failed" errors on wifi

Valkillmore

Newbie
I have been having an issue that I can't seem to find any similar reference to.

Whenever I try to copy large files from LAN shares to my tablet (always movies) via wifi, using various different file managers (ES , File Expert , File Manager HD), the copy process fails, and I only get an average of 10-15% of the file copied.

Songs and pictures seem to have no issue, even multi-copying bunches at a time.

But any files over even a couple hundredd MB's fail every time. I thought it might be an issue with ES File Manager but I tried to other 'liked' file managing apps and they have the same issue.

It doesn't seem like my wifi or router is the issue as my 'N' bridge stays intact and other devices don't show signs of a dropped connection.

I am just lost as to where to go from here as I am fairly new to the Android world.
If someone has a link or suggestion I am all ears. Thank you ahead of time. (Please don't suggest rooting.............scares me:eek:...:p)

Try Settings/wireless and networks/Wi-Fi settings/Wi-Fi disconnect policy / Never (uses more battery power) to see if you still have the problem.

Maybe with large files it is timing out

I gave this a shot. Doesn't seem to help, but thanks for a logical explanation (that I thought was going to work:( ). I also watched an entire transfer (errrr a partial transfer) and there was no screen timeout, wifi disconnect, or any other kind of interruption.....just 'copy failed'.

As well, playing around with this more, it seems to be happening even trying to transfer from a USB thumb drive as well. The only way I can have 100% success lately is manually plugging the A500 into one of my PC's and then copying or moving files to it/from it.

I tried using Wifi Explorer Pro to share some files from my Nexus to my A500 tab via the Google browser, and that fails too.

I've made sure no AntiVirus/sheild type apps running............that I can tell...........that might cut a download short. Just baffled. I've even gone as far as to uninstall Juice Defender to see if a setting was messing things up, but it made no difference.

I am also having issues with video playback and jittery video. The same movies play back perfectly on my brand new Galaxy Nexus but I guess that's another topic.

While I absolutely love my Galaxy Nexus, it's a love/hate relationship with my A500 tab right now. I wish I could put the OS from my Nexus on my tab. To dream............

Well that's a puzzle. I've transferred files over 1Gb without a problem and I've never connected to a PC.
I can transfer from my NAS and LAN shares over Wifi without a problem, so it's not a generic honeycomb or A500 problem.

I use file manager HD and use "run in background" for large file transfers otherwise I have had timeouts.

edit---

Just transferred a 550mb file from my netbook shared folder just to make sure that recent updates haven't screwed something up - worked fine. give File Manager HD a shot with "run in background".

I think you are right in that it is not a generic A500 problem. I will give other file managers another try, again.

It is really baffling me, and trying to find other reference online has yielded me few results, and none similar.

I have even gone so far as to try my Samsung Galaxy S, and my Samsung Galaxy Nexus using ES File Manager and both complete their LAN/Local copy/downloads without issue.
As well, I have tried various distances from the wifi router, in case signal was an issue, and the problem persists.

Gonna try your suggestion then I'll get back here with an update.

I am starting to wonder if it is the wifi adapter on my A500.

I tried with File Manager HD again. Same issue, and this time it didn't even copy across 100 MB and failed. I then tried File Expert again. Same thing there too.

The reason I think it is the wifi connection on the A500 is that when I tried to use iMediaShare (on the A500) at the same time as my Nexus is trying to copy files, a 'network error' popped up on my PS3 on the TV and the movie I was streaming thru iMediaShare cut off. Even when this occured, my Galaxy Nexus continued to copy the files (using ES) I told it to, maintaining it's wifi connection.

So I don't think it's my router, or the integrity of the wifi network itself as all other devices seem to have no wireless issues.

Not sure how to even approach this......very unlike what I am used to with Windows OS's where I can hunt down different ethernet/wifi adapter drivers and experiment.

I could be missing the mark here, but logical deduction has brought me to this conclusion. Another reason I wonder about my wifi adapter on my A500 is that when I try to set up a VPN on it, it doesn't save the VPN to memory, nor does it allow me to connect even though I have verified the settings numerous times with my working VPN settings from both the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Nexus. As well, when trying to update some games, I would have to continue the download several times.......could be an indicator something is up with the wifi adapter.

Again, this is a love/hate relationship with myself and this A500 right now. If I could just iron out the few weaknesses, I think I could actually really like this tablet.
1) stuttering movies that work fine on Nexus and S
2) VPN won't work
3) continuous copy failed errors with wifi
(3 main annoying problems)

I've had 3 a500's and never had this issue. I just happened upon the same annoying disconnects as you describe with my new a200. Please post resolution. My next step looks to be the service desk.

i was having trouble too.. but eventually gave up [on file copying method] and just played file over network using es file explorer and mirage [player] seemed the best combination for xvid, honorable mention for bsplayer lite too.. no player does mkv 264 that I have found.. B(

I use MXPlayer with ES File Explorer and can play most media in my LAN, but I don't have the option of simply setting my tab on the kitchen table and copying a few Gigs of movies across via wifi to the sdcard.
I have simply resorted to plugging my tab into one of my computers and copying files onto it. In the end its quicker anyways as far as data transfer rate.

I just got a survey from Acer and I made it clear I am not happy with certain aspects of the a500. We'll see if I get any response.

I just wish they could put Ice Cream Sandwich on it.

So I have finally narrowed it down to my Acer a500 dropping the wifi connection. I physically sat there, stuck toothpicks in my eyes and tried more files, and witnessed a quick drop, then reconnect. I was missing seeing the initial wifi drop. Now I know for sure what is going on.

Whether it is my Dlink DIR-655 router or the A500 has yet to be determined.

Tried this, but it made no difference. In fact it seemed to drop the signal and trigger the copy failed message even quicker.

I even wiped all data from the tablet, and only installed two file managers (ES File Explorer and File Manager HD)........in hopes it may have been another conflicting app previously. No difference, still dropping wifi.

Experimenting further. Might resort to getting ahold of Acer. :(

Aha !!!! :)

I believe I solved it.

I found reference online last night about the a500 and Dlink routers using DHCP and this possibly causing problems. Thought I'd give it a shot.

While I was using the DHCP Reservation Table (so in effect a 'virtual static ip')
this was still in effect using DHCP.

Normally my tab is reserved with ip 192.168.0.199

What I did was limit the router DHCP ip range from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.197

I then set my Acer a500 to a static ip of 192.168.0.199 in it's settings. (outside of the scope of DHCP)

BLAM no copy operation failed. 900MB files X 2 completed.

As well, since resetting my tab to factory, my VPN settings are now saving. Just have to see how the static ip works with my VPN incoming connection settings on my Acer laptop.

Holy crap, what a pain in the arse. :p

I used to do fine on any tablet but lately none of mine will complete a file copy from a network drive. Usually with ESfile manager. Size does not matter. Running Android 4.x
