I have this phone for two weeks and while a couple of days I could use Maps without an internet connection (was it cached data?) today it asks for a working network connection (I think it has been updated yesterday). If I get connected and use it will it be able to use the cached information when wifi is not available?

After every update, it will ask for internet connect for Google Map during 1st startup.
If offline, it will read from the cache.
The latest version can manually download map data (within 10 miles) from the point.
To turn on this option, click 'menu', 'more' , 'labs', scroll down to look for 'Download map area'.
Remember to click the icon/label - 'Download map area'.
