Root ? about Nandroid

Ok, I've tried searching and reading about nandroid backup/recovery and such, but it's made me more confused.

What is nandroid? How and where do I get it? I have an Optimus M with Android 2.2 rooted with z4Root. I haven't done any modifications such as flashing a new rom, or anything else. Just rooted and installed an app so I could wifi hot spot. I have since removed the app. My phone is still rooted though, just haven't really done anything with it.

I'm interested in custom roms, but I don't know where to look for 'em. Everything I read says to make sure you've got a nandroid back up. I found something that says it comes with something called clockwork, but I'm not sure what that is. I see a lot of threads about roms for 2.2.1, but my phone is 2.2. I wouldn't mind a rom for 2.3 or what ever the newer version is.

Anyway, thanks for any info you can give me to help clear up my confusion.

a nandroid back up is like a system restore point for windows but for your android system.
once your rooted with custom recovery you boot into recovery and make a nandroid back up.

custom recovery is used to flash roms make backup's, wipe data, cache and stuff like that the new custom recovery looks like this and can be found here http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/330813-all-one-recovery-thread.html

I read that thread and I couldn't find how to actually get into recovery, let alone a custom recovery (or are they the same?).

first place the recovery image on your sd card then
download Android Terminal Emulator from market
open and type su then accept superuser request you should get this #

Then type the following command hit enter and your done

flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img

Now reboot phone,
