Does setcpu speed up the Moment at all or is its only real use for downclocking to save battery?

You can set the governor for the cpu, which basically tells the cpu what do to with it's resources. Depending on the kernel, you can overclock. And you can set the idle frequency of the cpu when it's sleeping.

Overclocking the moments processor has no beneficial gain, quite the opposite. The 800mhz our moments run is already an overclocked speed maxing out its 'safe' capabilities. Similar to the old DDR400 really being DDR333 overclocked at the factory to achieve maximum performance from the architecture. Overclocking from the 'pre-overclocked' state greatly increases the chance of serious permanent damage beyond the normal risk (not mention reaches the state of instability anyone who has ever overclocked anything knows of). The only use set-cpu has with the moment is profiling to reduce battery consumption when the phone is not being used or is underpowered. Or for the speed junkie's to override the phones automatic clock scaling (the phone actively changes the clock speed based on processor load, very well might i add) to keep it running wide open at 800mhz until it drops dead.

thanks that is kind of what I had figured after seeing the default clock was the highest the slider would go.
