Root About to Go Bionic

My OG Droid was screwing up, so I got frustrated and did some percussive maintenance, which did what it usually does and made the device fail completely (it's in several pieces, actually). So, now I'm upgrading.

Any tips for what to do/not do with the new device (besides not to throw it like a fastball)? I intend to root, any suggestions there?

Also, I've done some searching about the Wireless Tether issue. I know that the old school Wireless Tether for Root Users isn't currently working. I know that the way they do data on 4G/LTE makes just hacking the existing hotspot app a potentially bad idea. I believe that PDAnet is a workaround, correct? Does anyone know if/believe that a true wifi tether/hotspot app will ever be developed for the Bionic?

I am in and out of a car a lot, and I use the Tether on the droid enough that I will miss it if my new phone doesn't have the capability. That said, I'm not on it enough to justify the expense of doing it the "right" way and paying for it through Verizon. I am a pretty light tether user, I'm nowhere near my (grandfathered) Unlimited Data limit (oxymoron alert).

Thoughts? It would just be a LOT nicer if I could tether my laptop occasionally, and I'd love it if the Bionic had that capability without paying Verizon almost $500 over a two year contract.

You can do a USB tether for free w/out any hacking.

Ah, that's right. I had forgotten about that. I assume that violates no TOS with my carrier (Verizon), correct?

Wireless is more convenient, of course, since I can keep the phone on my duty belt, but that convenience is not worth paying the extra money.
