Root About to order my N5 from Google.... now what

One more thing after I get the "version 1.94 from SuperSU Download" can I then put SuperSU (made by Chainfire) I paid for it on the Google play store.

Nope, thats the full size of the recovery, thats all thats needed.

301MB sounds more like a full ROM or factory image. Every manufacturer does things a little differently though, and I've never had an LG phone done "their way" (ie non-nexus), so I could be wrong

Yeah the vv5 for the LG Connect was a factory full ROM. :)

I would like to have one for the N5, I don't know if I would ever need it though?

while you are waiting and if the computer is not busy download the nexus 5 stock image 4.4.2 from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#hammerheadkot49h
size is like 428 MB. this is all you need if anything happens. need stock recovery, recovery.img, stock kernel, boot.img, stock rom, system.img etc. all inside. it will be the lifesaver.

I am getting this one (4.4.2 (KOT49H) from "Factory Images "hammerhead" for Nexus 5 (GSM/LTE)" Right? It is 428 MB.

Thanks for that link!

Hey guys, one quick question....When I was using my LG Connect I had a Micro SD Card and I had it partitioned and was using an app called "Link2SD" it was made to keep games and their associated dex files, data files, etc on....

Since I no longer have use for a Micro SD Card would it be worth it to partition the internal memory space to keep my games on? On my LG I had the main partition on the SD Card at 20 Gigs and I had like 5 Gigs that was partitioned that I let the app "Link2SD" use to link my games. The new version of that app requires the 2nd partition to be a ext2, 3 or 4 format (something about the permissions would not work unless it was in that format)...???

TIA! I am still working on my LG Connect, getting all the files backed up with Titanium Backup and getting ready to copy everything to my PC so I can copy all my stuff to my Nexus! I haven't even turned my N5 on yet! Grrrrr I think tomorrow I will be ready to take the challenge of tuning my N5. :) hehehe

for rooting purposes you will use the free version that i linked. that is the standalone app needed for everything. after rooting is done and everything when you are using the phone normally, you will go to the play store and search for supersu pro. if you purchased it already it should say purchased. so all you download and install that tiny license file and have pro features unlocked like ota sur****l mode etc.

Did anyone see this?

yes i have seen it but i thought more knowledgeable folks should answer that. that app link2sd was popular before because most of the phones used to have little amount of internal storage those days. so to save precious internal storage you used that app to install user apps to sd cards. as of now you have 27 GB of total user space and around 25 GB of free space. so i guess saving space is kinda moot now. there could be some other legit reason for using that app but as i said i do not know about that enough.

Truthfully there would be no benefit to using an app like Link2SD or App2SD on the N5.
As akmsr said this can be a very beneficial tool for devices with small internal storage space and that have issues of running out of space and getting the "Low on Memory" warning.

On android there are 2 main partitions:
The "/system" partition - Is where the OS is stored.
The "/data" partition - Is where all the user data is stored. Downloaded apps are stored in "/data/apps"
System settings that you changed (ringtones, wallpaper etc) are stored in "/data/data"
Also there are a several other minor partitions but these really have no use to the topic at hand.

Both of these main partitions are on the internal nand flash memory or eMMC (Embedded MultiMedia Card)
The whole data partition is used for apps and system data only. Which left no where for music, movies, photos, documents etc. to be stored. This is where the SD card comes into play. Typically with devices that have a removable SD card, would also have a small internal nand flash memory and wouldn't allow for much user data to be stored. Once full the device would lag/run slow and you couldn't download additional apps or have any space to store things.
Other than deleting stuff off of your device one of the solutions was to use apps like link2sd or app2sd to move apps to the SD card to free up internal space.

On the N5 you still have these 2 main partitions but since it doesn't have a removable SD card, it has a larger internal nand flash memory so that it can have an internal SD card. Technically you could look at the whole nand flash memory as a huge internal SD card. Although a partition of that internal nand flash memory is a "/sdcard" partition.

whether the device has an external or internal SD card, "/sdcard" is just a mount point that android uses to store data.
On the N5 it actually points to an internal memory partition "/data/media/0" which is actually the "/sdcard"
The N5 is different in that, you still continue to have your "/data" partition but within "/data" you have:

/data/app
/data/data
/data/media/0

Which this allow for the N5 to have a usable user storage of:
32gb N5 = 26.7
16gb N5 = 12.55

So as you can see with the N5 and how it handles the SD card that there is no need to use an app like link2sd or to partition it. I would also be concerned with trying to partition the "/sdcard" since it's actually a part of the internal nand flash memory and you wouldn't want to damage the eMMC.

Hope this helps!

Okay, I have started to unlock the boot loader but when I plug my phone in it says that I don't have the drivers (I am in Fastboot mode when I plug my phone in) can someone point me to the right drivers please?

Yep... Take a look here it's a pretty detailed guide on setting up adb/fastboot and has a couple different options for N5 drivers. I think I used the universal naked drivers and I already had the LG driver package installed as well.
Nexus 5 Driver (ADB and Fastboot) Installation Guide

If you need anymore help on how to set them up just let us know!

Wow! I finally got done with the rooting guide, the hardest part was installing the naked drivers.

When the phone rebooted after I flashed the SU zip file it started updating Android...

Now I have some apps that I don't think I need like Google Hindi Input, Google Korean Keyboard, Google PinyinGoogle Play Magazines, HP Print Service Plugin, iWnnIME Keyboard, Keep, MusicFX, Quickoffice, Tags, etc... can I get rid of those apps? What is safe to delete? What apps do I need to keep?

Do I still need BusyBox app?

One more thing how do I backup my EFS data and IMEI and/or MEID?

I just checked with Titanium Backup and I am Rooted!!!

Thanks Guys for all your help. I might have some more questions later on.... :)

Also of you have installed either the android-SDK or the mini-SDK. I would highly recommend that you update your path environment variable to include the adb/fastboot installation to the C:\
This will make using the command prompt easier for adb and fastboot commands. When you set the path environment variable to C:\ you literally just have to open command prompt and type:

adb devices

And the connected device is automatically detected due to the path set up.

Otherwise you have to type out the full path to where you saved the SDK on the PC with "cd" in front of the path. An example of what you'd have to type:

cd \programs\android-sdk\platform-tools

Then you'd be able to use adb and fastboot.

Alternatively depending on your PC, this doesnt work on Win XP. You can also go to the folder where the adb and fastboot folder are and then, press the shift button on the keyboard and right click on the mouse and a command prompt will open in that folder and you can just type:

adb devices

And it will detect and list the device connected.

Just some ideas to make things a little easier for you.

You shouldn't have a problem deleting any of those apps. It's the system apps that you need to be careful with. I'd recommend performing a nandroid backup first before deleting, changing things or making modifications and flashing ROMs. You can also us TB to freeze or delete apps but make a backup first.

Boot to recovery and go to backup it should be preseleted for your nandroid backup but make sure that data/boot/system are selected. Dont worry about backing up user data at all and the efs we will back up seperatly. Then swipe the slider to backup. Once it's done backing up, select home and select backup again, unselect all the backup options except for efs. Slide the slider to backup the efs. Make sure to take a copy of the efs backup and save it off of the device onto like you PC.

I'd also recommend flashing the newest version of TWRP v2.7
Here's 2 options of v2.7 for you depending on how you want to do it...
This one from Hook you will have to flash it through fastboot. Rename the TWRPv2.7 to "recovery.img" then place it in your platform-tools folder http://androidforums.com/nexus-5-all-things-root/834849-new-version-twrp-recovery-2-7-0-0-hammerhead.html
Boot to fastboot, connect to your PC and open command prompt and type:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

The one from xda, just download it and you can flash it thought your current recovery - Recovery Zip Collection | Google Nexus 5 | xda-developers

Also I see you said you were rooted... Were you also successful at unlocking the bootloader?

Edit:
BusyBox is definitely a very useful and beneficial tool to have installed on your device and I would recommend installing it. Take at look at the definition that I wrote on what BusyBox does and some of the benefits of having it installed - look at post #350 here -
http://androidforums.com/nexus-5-all-things-root/807957-rom-dirty-unicorns-4-4-2-hammerhead-4-11-14-a-7.html

Yeah, bootloader is unlocked. So far the only thing that I backed up was

boot.emmc.win
efs1.emmc.win
efs2.emmc.win

All of them also have .md5 files too. I zipped the folder up and uploaded it to Google Drive. So I need to go back and do the huge system file (600 or so MBs?)?

How come I have 2 obb folders on my N5 internal space? I have one obb folder in

"Computer\Nexus 5\Internal storage\obb"

and then I have the one that is in

"Computer\Nexus 5\Internal storage\Android\obb" which one do I use to put my .obb files in?

Also I checked out the properties of my Nexus 5 internal storage and it just says that the file system is "Generic hierarchical". I have never heard of that before I wonder if my N5 will mount on my old Mac G5 PPC? Plus I am having some problems copying stuff from my old Micro SD Card to my Nexus. I copied my whole SD Card from my old phone onto my Laptops Desktop but some things won't copy it just gives me this error "Cannot copy Password360, The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected, then gives me 2 options, Stop Copying or Skip this File"...

I know it didn't stop responding because I can open the Internal space on my N5 and copy other things to it, it's just certain folders that gives me that error... weird huh?

Yes, I would love to get a list of the Apps that I can either delete or Freeze with Titanium Backup" I am always worried that I will freeze or delete something that the Android OS needs and smoke my brand new Nexus 5!

One other thing, when I installed the Naked Drivers and then looked in my Device Manager it says under "Android Device" "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface", is that right?

Thanks guys for all your help!

Yes make sure that you save your "system" backup.

I'm not sure why you have two .obb files. I only have one in /sdcard/android/
Inside the /android/ folder there is a data and obb folder. The obb folder contains a .nomedia file and is 0.00kb. So it's an empty file. I don't actually do anything with the .obb file. I just copy my backups from the TWRP folder on the root of the /sdcard/

The N5 should mount to your Mac PC but I believe you'll need a program like Android file transfer.

OK this can be a pain in the butt. There are a few problems that when copying files from a PC to the N5 will give you an error. Firstly a driver issue can cause this error. You can try either enabling or disabling USB debugging. You can use adb to push the file or try airdroid or something similar. Try renaming the file or folder to something with a shorter name or breaking the file into smaller files.
As far as the "password 360" error make sure that there isn't a password or lock set on the file in properties.

I know it didn't stop responding because I can open the Internal space on my N5 and copy other things to it, it's just certain folders that gives me that error... weird huh?

I don't personally have a list of apps that are safe to remove. One of the easiest and safest ways is to just freeze it with titanium backup and then run the phone for a while... If it causes any problems with the phone like force closes or other apps crashing then just unfreeze it and then you know that you have to have that app running on the phone.

One other thing, when I installed the Naked Drivers and then looked in my Device Manager it says under "Android Device" "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface", is that right?

This is definitely not right. It should be listed as "Google Nexus 5 ADB Interface" and this might also be part of the problem with transferring files.
I don't recommend tool kits... But in this case I would recommend that you install Wugfreshs tool kit and use his driver setup. You can use his program and follow the directions to delete all of the installed drivers on your PC and then reinstall the proper drivers back to your PC.

Thanks guys for all your help!

I put all my answers in red within your post.. Made it easier for me. :)

Thanks for all the answers guy, you rock! I think the problem with copying was that I already had that folder on my N5.... I don't know why it wasn't showing up on my laptop (Running Windows 7 Home Edition Premium).

I have posted 2 screen shots

The first one is of the Fastboot screen, I wanted to post this so y'all can see if everything is right on it. The only thing that concerns me is it saying "Secure Boot - Enabled"? Is that right?

Also I was browsing through my Nexus using the app ES File Explorer (newest version, this is a great file browser) and I noticed that some of my folders have some very odd creation dates. That second obb folder I was talking about it also had an odd date but I deleted that second obb folder, I don't know how it got there?

The date that some folders are showing is 3/2/1970!!!! Ummmmm I don't think my Nexus was around back in 1970, matter of fact I wasn't around in 1970 (although I was around in 1972)... :)

How do you think these folders got such weird dates and is it a big deal?

Thanks again guys for all your help! Sorry it's taking me all day to get back on here but lately this is the only time of the day that I can come in here and do stuff... I don't know why I am so busy all the time right now? :D

Everything looks good there.

I wouldn't worry about the date, it happens and that's just the default it sets to when it doesn't have a date

Hey Guys, I just got done running the Nexus Root Toolkit and everything went smoothly. After it checked the drivers and ADB and said everything was fine I made a Nandroid Backup with Custom Recovery (Came out to 1.62GB, I checked all the boxes and backed up everything).

Still though in the Device Manager under "Android Device" it says "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface" but under "Portable Devices" it says "Nexus 5"....

See screenies.... :)

So what do you think? What do I type in the Command Window (when I hold Shift and right click in the sdk-tools folder and it says "Open Command Window Here" to make sure everything is working fine?

Is it a :dontknow: or a

TIA!

@xdrc45 You rock!!! :)

@zandersig,
Thanks a lot man... I really appreciate it!! :D I'm just happy that I'm able to offer assistance and help out.

The "Secure Boot - Enabled" is perfectly OK. It just means that the boot.img/kernel is protected.

You didn't know that the N5's birthday is 3/2/1970?
Thats when the first nexus line was being built.
Lol... I'm kidding :D As Rxpert83 said it's really just a default and a bug in the recovery. Happens with some versions of TWRP and CWM.
If you update your TWRP to v2.7 and make a new nandroid backup it will fix the date issue and you can delete the old incorrect dated backup or if it bothers you, alternatively you can just rename the backup or you can follow this method to correct the date... It's lengthy thought just to correct the date issue - http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/tool-fix-twrp-backup-dates-t2640419
I think making a new backup with the updated version of TWRP is easier thought and you can test out your adb and fastboot setup.

Ok. To check and see if the "Nexus 4 adb interface" is working, connect to your PC with USB debugging enabled, open command prompt and type:

adb devices

The PC will list the devices attached with a long serial number.
In fact this would be a great point to test and to flash the TWRP 2.7 from Hook. See post #39, Download the new TWRP and put it in the "platform tools" folder. Rename the TWRP to just "recovery.img" (without the quotes) Then open command prompt and type:

adb devices

If everything is working properly it will list the adb devices attached, then type:

adb reboot fastboot

Device will reboot to fastboot mode
Then type:

fastboot devices

This will make sure that fastboot is working properly and will list the fastboot devices attached.
Then type:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Then it will flash the new TWRP v2.7 over the existing recovery and you'll be good to go. At this point you can reboot to recovery and make a new backup with the correct date.

I'd also just note when you make a nandroid you only need to backup /boot, /data, and /system. That will save you some space on your internal memory. Boot contains your kernel, system contains the rest of the ROM and data is your installed apps, settings, and data

Its also a good idea to backup the EFS seperately and keep that somewhere safe (such as your computer, a dropbox account, or better yet both ;)).

Thanks man, Sorry I have been gone so long.... I am starting a new job (tomorrow, actually it's today) and when I get home I will install the new version of TWRP.... and report back. Yeah when I do the ADB command to list devices I get a string of numbers, etc... so I guess that Nexus 4 ADB is working fine...?

I'm crashing out now, got to get up early but later tonight I will put the new version of the recovery on and make new backups!

Lately I have just been playing with my Nexus 5 and man it's an awesome phone, WAAAAAAAY better than my ol' crappy LG Connect running Android OS 2.3.6.... :D

You know what? When I first rooted my Nexus 5 and I put the Recovery on it was version 2.7.0.0... But my dates are still wrong.... Is there a newer version than 2.7.0.0 ??
