Absurdly awful battery life!

I don't think the applications are the only problem here.

I've had two Droids now that have perfectly good 3G performance but horrible 1x signal. I'm getting complaints from people I talk to on the phone about how I sound, even though I hear them better than I've ever heard people on the phone. I'm getting 1x signal of around -100dBm in my home, versus -80dBm on my old phones. The phone heats up very fast on calls, no doubt trying to hold this weak signal.

As I don't have time to deal with betaware, I'm going back and having my old phone reactivated.

in sounds like the phone - not the O/S

First problem I see is, the device doesn't report using 1% increments. It does 10% increments, which makes it a bit harder to track the real battery usage.

Second, I get between 1-2 bars at home, I notice battery drain is so much more then at work where I get full bars. This is the same for all devices, when the phone is getting weak reception, it uses more power to make the connection. I have had the same issue with my previous blackberry devices also.

Mine went from pretty good to awful about 4 days after I got the phone. I had downloaded handcent and font package 3 and it sucked bttry like a 8 cylinder sucks gas. I havs since deleted those and everything else for that matter. Let it die totally and still it sucks . Maybe 4 hrs of little to no use.

The second night, the battery was at 90% and 30% by the morning. Using taskkiller, I noticed a process google.maps.friendfinder or something like that running and I couldn't kill it. I pulled the battery and it went away but then it still comes back once in a while. I'm thinking this process may be constantly polling on a bad cell/data connection and eating my battery. I try to keep my wireless on when I'm home and that might be helping... Or I'm tricking myself into thinking, it's helping.

Anyone else notice this friendfinder service running and not being able to kill it.

Just a thought.

I'm gonna 'train' my battery a few more days and hope it turns around, because I like everything about the phone I have, it's not exhibiting any of the other problems some people have reported and I'd hate to trade it in and get one with other issues.

Got it Wednesday, played with it until it died, it came with less than half a charge. Charged it all night and it lasted around 6 hours on Thursday with a fair amount of use...still not close to 'heavy' as described by others in this thread. Let it die and charged it overnight and it lasted a little over 7 hours today with about the same usage. I'm hoping that's a sign that things will continue to improve. And based on some accounts here, it sounds like it could be the case.

Completely love the phone and would love it even more if I was getting 10-16 hours on a charge. And people are really saying they can go a full day and a half on a single charge? That'd be incredible.

For me, the battery life has been okay, but not what I would consider great. I haven't truly calibrated the battery yet, and I am going to go through a couple of cycles of that (phone has never been less than 20% discharge).

I'm not overly concerned, because I've been using the phone a ton, and where I live, I get signal strength of -88 to -94 dB (which I'm sure is killing the battery.) I'm curious to see what kind of battery life I get when I have a decent signal in the big city.

I have appreciated these threads and have learned some good practices to conserve energy. Thanks to the posters.
