Help Accented Letters

Hi all-

I'm having an issue with foreign and accented characters in sms messages.

I can type them, and indeed I can see them in the conversation as part of my own sent messages, but I cannot receive them in messages from other people- the character in question being replaced by '?'.

Is there anything I can do to be able to see these letters?
