Help access point for home network, hardware suggestions?

i'd like to connect to my 10/100 cat5 home network and use the phones wifi. i have a router with an open connection. i'm on verizon dsl 1.5 dl 364 up. my 3g is a little weak at home but useable. i'd like to get hardware suggestions / tips on what to expect and or to avoid. if the wireless can't be secured i'm not interested. i've had my optimus for a whole week now. wow it's quite a step up from a rumor touch!

the router is an smc and it's about eight years old. a mixed wired and wireless router is an option to take advantage of the computers that are gigabit lan.

most newegg reviews on access points, bridges and routers have almost no phone related info.

Just look at the phone as any other device on your home network if the phone sees the router it should connect, there really nothing you have to do other then enter the passkey into the phone if you have the security enabled on the router.and make sure the routers DHCP is issuing IP addressing.
