Activating without simcard?

I have a HTC Hero locked to Orange UK - now, I do not have an Orange sim card, and when booting with another sim card, I just get asked for a sim unlock code, and if I do not enter a sim card, it just tells me to insert one.

Is there any way or booting the device to get into usb debugging mode so that I might unlock it?

I would just pop down road and get a pay as you go sim...

I would just purchase an unlock code. My Hero (new one) was also locked to Orange, when I bought it with the phone IMEI they got me the unlock code. First time I boot it up with my SIM (Vodafone), I got asked for the unlock code, enter it, and I am ready to go.

No Orange SIM card needed...
