Help ADB install failure

I have tried for several hours to get the ADB install to work with no luck. I have followed the directions here NookColor USB ADB - nookDevs several times, including the 'simple' ones as directed to the youtube link. Nothing works. Way too much time on this.
Can I proceed with other additions without this?
From reading here, I want to install the Phiremod app, as it sounds like the more simple ROM.
IF I am having trouble with the ADB shoul I forget about trying this?

Is there not enough information here for anyone to offer any advice? Mabye I asked the question wrong.

What prompted this was an attempt to back up my internal NC memory prior to installing phiremod.
Do I have to have the adb installed to back up or is there another way?

I haven't needed ADB in the year I've owned a Droid-X with 20-30 custom rom installs or my Nook.

Most of us use Rom Manager (available in Market) to back up our stock, rooted rom.

That is what I needed to know. Installed Rom Manager and it does the job. All that time on adb attempt for nothing! Still learning. Thanks again!
