Help adding contacts

So if I am sending or fowarding a text how do I add contacts. if i start typing a name it will pop up but is there anyway to see a list of contacts and check them to insert them?

It might change with what messaging app you are using. I use Handcent, so when you are starting a completely blank text it has a plus sign on the top right corner to add multiple people.
