Help adding extra accounts on gmail

I have been trying to add extra accounts on the pre-installed gmail app on my phone but every time that i type in the username and password it says i have no data connection but I'm connected to wifi and have full bars

what if you added the accounts to the phone via 'accounts and sync' under settings? It should auto-add them to the gmail app.
