advantages of froyo 2.2?

after reviewing several threads on problems & issues I'm wondering what is so great about froyo 2.2 & is it worth the 4+ hours of manual updating. I'm pretty satisfied with Velocity 4 until I get the Thunderbolt or another new Droid phone. what does froyo have that I currently don't?

Hey! I like this question. I, myself, have already cracked mine, running 2.2.1 rooted right now. But this is still a good question, people should know the major differences in the benefits and the GUI before they upgrade and spend all of their time doing that.

I LOVE FroYo, js. I wish it didn't come with all of that dumb software/bloatware that LG and Verizon insist on, but I notice that the speed, even with all of that, is incredible. It's very fast and natural. No crashes or anything. I feel as if by the end of the Velocity .4 hype, it was being pushed too far with all of the crashes. And I think FroYo brings similar performance without any instability. This is after I did a cache and data wipe. :)

You probably have heard the disclaimer "your mileage may vary", right? Repeat that after each of the benefits I've listed.

For me, FroYo has thus far provided the following benefits:

Speed - much faster for me than any of the custom ROMs were.
Stability - NO Forced Closes. None. Period.
Native Apps2SD support. This also seems faster and more reliable.
Improved look and feel. Cosmetic but I like the fresher look.
Improved radio. At least for me.
Added features like missed calls/messages on the lock screen. (A feature you either love or hate.)
Allows for future implementation of custom ROMs based on FroYo as they become available.

Of course, opinions are like buttholes - everyone's got one! :D

Also. If you carefully follow the guide, it doesn't take more than an hour. Unless you run into one of the issues others have experienced. If you have waited to see the fallout, you'll gain by the experience of others as most of the issues have been resolved.

Again, your mileage may vary. You may not want or need FroYo if you are perfectly happy with your phone now. And that's okay too! :)

thanks for the feedback. I'll probably be updating to froyo later today, I just can't resist anymore lol

After getting Froyo on Sunday here's my take...

1) Phone feels faster. Maybe it's just the satisfaction of finally getting 2.2
2) The dialer / contacts look is awesome. Cosmetic, I know but it makes the phone look and feel muuuuuuch more up to date.
3) The new text message on the lock screen. It's not a big deal, but it's certainly neat.
4) New Gmail interface.
5) The soft keyboard now makes a pop when you click on the key (if it always did that... I never noticed!)
6) The auto rotate now works so the screen is rotated when the phone is flipped from vertical to horizontal in either direction (again if it always did that I missed it some how).

What is this "new text message" on the lock screen? I haven't noticed anything different there. The puzzle piece that you have to slide into place? Is that what you are referring too?

My upgrade probably only took about 10 minutes, had it not been for not being able to install the correct driver on XP Pro Laptop. I just went into Device MGR and manually updated Samsung Driver for USB and zoom, zoom.
