Root Afraid I'm not really rooted

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster!

I rooted my Eris and flashed KaosFroyo v39 in December. A couple weeks ago, everything started FCing all the time, my home screens would lock up and lag and generally not function, and my lock screen would freeze and not let me unlock frequently. I had a hunch it might be ADW Launcher causing the problems, so I installed Launcher Pro and forced ADW to stop -- and voila! My phone started running stable again!

The problem became, though, that ADW relaunches on its own, and then it's really difficult to get in and force it to quit when the lock screen, well, locks up.

This afternoon, I tried to install Titanium Backup to delete ADW once and for all, but surprise of all surprises...it told me I don't have root access. This is my first time having a rooted Android device, so I'm sure there are nuances here that I'm missing, but if I don't have root access, how was I able to flash KaosFroyo in the first place? How do I fix what I have going on right now so I can get ADW off my phone?

Thanks!

There should be an app called SU or Superuser in your app drawer. Go into that and it will list all of the apps that have been granted (or denied) superuser (i.e., root) access. It may be that Titanium is in the list of denied apps. You can change that in the Superuser I think just by tapping it. If Titanium has a red dot icon after it, it's been denied root access.

If you get Titanium running, you also may want to install a different ROM. KF is one of my least favorite ROMs at this point; people seem to have all sorts of problems with it. Anything but KaosGingerbread should be fine. At this point, I think that GSB or Tazz Gingerbread are the best non-stock ROMs for the Eris.

Ahh, that's a huge help, thanks! I'm having a little trouble with it, though...Titanium Backup doesn't seem to be listed at all. It doesn't look like the app has even 'asked' for the access to be granted or denied. Any idea what I should do next?

Thanks for the tip about flashing a new ROM. I might do that tonight. I'm tired of not having GPS! With so much information out there, I went with the one I was hearing the most about. I'll try one of the ones you suggested.

Does Titanium even start to the initial screen? If so, there is a button called "Problems" on the lower right. You could *try* clicking that and then letting it update the superuser app (that's one of the buttons.) You could also try the "get busybox" button. (Under root access on the Titanium initial screen, does it list a busybox version?)

Seriously, GSB is great, A few things to know about it:

1. It requires that you download and install a google apps package. You need to flash that right after you flash gsb and before you restart the phone. So, install instructions would be: get the GSB and gapps zip files on your SD card; restart in Recovery; make a Nandroid backup; wipe data/factory reset; wipe dalvik cache; flash GSB; flash Google apps; restart.

2. After you set it up, go into settings->CyanogenMod settings->performance and turn on the setting "lock home in memory".

GSB and install instructions and info are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944430

every time ive had prollems with titanium not working, tapping the prollems button and getting busybox has fixed it. hopefully that works out for you.

not much else to add,GSB is an excellent rom choice if you dont have strong desires to get back to a sense rom :)

Thanks guys! I got it working. BusyBox was the key! :)

And thank you guys for confirming why I rooted in the first place -- I knew that between me, the internet, and forums like this one, I didn't have to settle for the terrible Verizon customer service for this previously non-functional device!

Titanium has done that to me a couple times but it was always after flashing a new rom and reinstalling the apps. Go into superuser and click allow for Titanium.
I just seen I'm way late. I didn't see y'alls post. :( Think I'm going to call it a day and sit on the front porch and watch the dog run around.
