I guess I've just never understood why people buy smart phones and then use them as dumb phones. You would save money by buying a dumb phone and using an extremely limited data plan. I just opened the My Verizon app on my phone and it shows I've used nearly 3 GB of data this cycle (ends 9/21). I will likely end up way over that before this month is over. I don't consider myself a power user at all though. I don't tether. I don't use my phone as a wi-fi hot spot. I use my phone as a smart phone is meant to be used. I stream media to my phone. I get email on my phone. I surf the web every once in awhile. I check what the weather is doing. This is what a smart phone is meant to be used for. To me it makes no sense to turn off data on the phone on a regular basis. The guy next door to you with the dumb phone has the same functionality and he probably got his phone for free. You paid $200 and $30 a month more than he does and your phone does the same thing. I find the whole thing extremely puzzling. You're spending all this extra money and not getting any more functionality. Why did you spend all the extra money on a smart phone?

3g is definitely a battery sucker, used to just watch my battery drop when surfing the web in a low 3g coverage area. I don't think there is a right way and a wrong way to use your phone, but some of the replies to posts on forums sometimes get misconstrued, I think sometimes people are just offering posters tips on other ways to use their phone they may not of thought of(solicited or not) and not attempting to dictate to them how to use their phone. Obviously everyone uses their phone differently but everyone on here might not know all the shortcuts and tips they have available to them. There are apps on the market that can automatically adjust settings for you so you don't even have to think about them, like the ability to automatically turn on and off gps or 3g when conditions are met.
That's partly what smartphones are for, to simplify tasks, even if those task are to simplify your smartphone.

Not too mention while I am at work, I tether my laptop from my phone to get internet. so yea that could be done with a dumb phone. Easiest way I find is to put the HTC Mobile widget on your homescreen. It's under the settings widgets.

There are definately times I'd like to drop down and conserve as much power as possible - like when I was at a football game with a low battery on Saturday night. It was so lopsided I probably should have gone home and charged my phone!

Ok, thanks. A dumbphone was exactly what I needed Saturday. With 103,000 people in the stadium using the same few towers, I couldn't get on the internet when I tried and I couldn't send or receive phone calls when I tried.

I could send & receive texts and my battery was almost dead. I went into my power widget and turned everything off - including this feature (dumb, desperate luck). I still had cell service for texts and my phone lasted two or three more hours on the 10% I had left.

While I like having the power of a smartphone, I think this is a great piece of info to have when you are in battery conservation mode like I was.

I usually turn off my 3g unless I need it too. I had a monster battery extension for a while but this does the same thing. I keep the on/off button on my home screen so it is fast and easy.

Oh... since you guys are on the subject of phone usage...
My mother has a Droidx just for the better signal push and so she could drop her dsl @ home and just tether. She does not even use txt messaging. The phone is simply a money saving device.

Yeah I noticed that a while ago, turn off the 3G and your phone will last you 2 days haha, leave it on continuous and you might get 4 whole hours. TURRRRIBLE.

Your phone is messed up (aka an app is updating too much). I get over 24 hours on the HTC 1500mAh and never turn off 3G (except some occasional wifi use at home).

It could be that he lives in an area with poor 3g service. This causes the battery to drain very fast.

I've been in poor areas plenty, myself. I can see 12-14 hours, but saying it'll be dead in four hours is a bit of an exaggeration or something is wrong with it.

i use my phone as a work phone. Beleive it or not, actual phone calls is the worse killer of the battery. I will talk to customers about 7 to 8 times. some calls 10 minutes and some only a few. but by 2:00pm it's down to 50%. I use wifi at work for speed (bad coverage) but I can't trun off 3G because visual voicemail doesn't work then. Does anyone know if i'm using WIFI (and still have 3G on) do they both eat my batt? or does wifi take over and do everything(mostly)?????

Ive had my phone for a little over 2 months, I have yet to turn 3g off, I see anywhere from 12-20 hours between charges, I'm usually recharging when I'm down to 10-20% of the battery. I have a stock battery. I wonder if some people are in places where 3g coverage isn't as good and it pulls more juice.

JuiceDefender will do this. It even tells you how much you have extended your battery life.

I never really jump into conversations like this. But isn't a true smart phone a phone that can adapt to a varying degrees of use and demand. I can tell you this, make a phone without these option and I'll, show you an outdated phone before it hits the stores. Why buy a smart phone?...ahh convenience, program-ability, updatability, it isn't like these phones are $700 like my first smart phone(ipaq), there pretty affordable(at least for renewing or first time customers). Whats makes this a true smart phone is the widgets that come with it. I use a toggle widget for dimming, one might argue use auto dim. Its all personal preference, I have found useful info because of what other have done to improve their phone, from customizing their home screens to what SMS program they use. Do i use live wall paper with this beautiful screen or photos for wallpaper. I sometimes even go back to bare bones. Everyone just enjoy the phone and share what new innovations you have discovered, that's why we come to this forum..

I think this thread should have been titled "after a day without DATA". I was confused at first how on earth one got better battery life on 1xRTT vs 3G as that would be the exact opposite of what would happen. Your battery would drain like a sieve trying to pull everything down with the same power but an order of magnitude less throughput. Had to read a few posts down to realize what the OP was actually doing.

I leave 3G off while I'm not using. I placed the Mobile switch widget on my homescren and turn 3G on when I need it, then off when the phone is idle. I can easily make it from 6am to 11pm on one charge.

Dayyyymnn, you really DON'T use your phone do you? lol. I know when my phone is on stand by it takes 5+ hours for it to lose 1% (assuming it is sleeping). I use my phone a whole hell lot more now that I know what I'm doing with it and my girlfriend can attest to that. lol.
