Root After Rooting .621 (for previously unrooted device)

I bought a used phone that had the 621 update on it. I dug around various forums and found a way to revert to milestone x using linux and then rooted the phone. According to the workaround/root method I used I can't SBF to 602 o 605 and can't run Froyo ROMs.

I have titanium backup and root explorer, but I totally jumped the gun- I need to learn more on how these apps work so I don't accidentally screw something up.

My first goal is to remove the bloatware- my service provider is Verizon. Is it better to find a decent ROM or to go in and remove the bloatware manually (assuming I'm understanding the concept of a ROM correctly). I was able to remove some of the bloatware, but there are so many files and file types I stopped to avoid causing a problem.

I'll check through the terminology and see if I can find some guides specific to this stuff. Normally I'd jump right in and try it, but since I used a work around for my root, I'm treading lightly.

Also, on a thread I read here, there was an app called Root Keeper or something like that which would help avoid future OTA updates, but I can't find it. Can someone give me the right name or recommend an app like this?

I can't use CM7 since the steps involved seem to involve SBF Froyo and the root method I used states not to run Froyo ROMs :{
 
=\ i tried it and i ended up in bootloop. i'm sbf back to milestone x right now. could you glance over my below steps and see what i'm skipping/doing wrong?

SBF milestone x in linux
root using zergrush
sign into my google account
download titanium backup, rom manager, and D2 bootstrap
download the CM7 file and move to sd card
open rom manager, and run the clockwork mod and choose Droid X (2nd init)
open bootstrap, choose bootstrap recovery
open rom manager and choose install from sd card

it reboots in clockwork mod mode and i navigate to install from sd and choose the CM7 file
then it ran a few lines and said install from sd card complete and then didn't do anything for 5-10 minutes...

so i navigated to reboot and rebooted it (from the cwm mode) and then it entered bootloop. i let it sit for another 10 minutes, but nothing happened at which point i took out the battery, let it rest for a few minutes and started the process all over again

so right now, it's been rooted and is the 621/604 and i'm going to stop playing with it and hope you or someone else responds tonight :]

After that. Install ROM Manager from the market. Install clockwork from ROM Manager Reboot to recovery.

Wipe data
Wipe Cache
Advanced - Wipe davlik

Then choose install zip, navigate to the ROM and select it. Do not install anything else or take any other steps in between here. Install Gapps. Hell I generally wipe all AGAIN right after that. Once you are completely wiped and have yourself up and running then you can try the other stuff. I don't even mess with Titanium backup or anything as Google Play does a decent job of getting my apps into the "my apps" section of play.

Don't forget the first boot can take up to 3 retries and up to 20 minutes.

If you desktop only boots from USB and you can't boot from CD, use this program to turn the *.iso file into a bootable USB instead. Works faster too. When it asks you to select a linux distro, select the option below and pick your *.iso instead. Also when your computer boots off of the USB it will give you boot options, select option #1. Then press 1 to install the image, while the phone is in bootloader mode. Then it will reboot. Unplug the phone from the computer. Go to settings - developer options the enable non-market stuff, then enable USB debugging. Plug the phone back in, set it to charge only. And run option #2 "root your phone" on the computer. Takes less than 10 minutes.

Ah, yes, I got CM7 to work near perfectly- about a week ago, the SD card started automatically un-mounting itself and there don't seem to be clear answers for this issue so I had to SBF back to Milestone.

I have too many things going on right now so I'll probably just leave Milestone unless something with it stops working as well.

The method above definitely works though. :]

I have done the usb root method listed above, downloaded rom manager and clockwork, but my phone just reboots like normal, never getting to the wipe screens, unless I hold the home key and power to reboot. Then it will let me wipe data and cache, but there is not an advanced screen, only third option is to reboot.

I can manually load a rom, but it doesn't take, I get an error. I have checked MD5 and it matches.

I did not download / install bootstrap, is that a requirement?

yes it is by far the most important part. You can't install or wipe without it.

With Milestone you have some different stuff because it's a European ROM. You can install the 2nd in it ROMS from the post pinned to the top. Or you can install these classic ROMS Goose fixed up.

If you need everything to work go with CM7 or the Goose fixed ROMS. If you want ICS MIUI is pretty good.

I also had the .621 update, was rooted. I am now on the Milestone X, tried the CM7, but my home button quit working normally, would wake the phone up, just never went back to the home screens.

I tried the vortex rom, but it wouldn't take, just ended up in the boot loadr.
 
No, there's no app drawer. You can use a launcher, or just make folders to sort your apps into. I made folders & gave them relevant names, but left my most-used apps on the desktop.

Go to themes to change the boot animation. Mine is a flying Tardis I found online. :)

It takes a few minutes to completely boot & there's always one force-close (for me). After Droid2bootstrapper loads, I'm in 'bidness! Love it! :)
