After update cannot get into recovery

Hi, I recently updated my firmware to 4.0.3. After this my phone was no longer rooted. I tried to root it but foolishly flashed a wrong insecure kernel. With some help from someone here I re-installed ICS. But still I can't get my phone to root. I have installed the correct insecure kernel but SU wont recognise any of my root apks. I checked if the binary was up to date which it's not.
Long story short, i need to install a new binary. But I can't get into recovery whatever I do. I tried Quickboot, CWM and just pressing up/down and power but no luck.
How can I flash the new binary when I can't enter recovery.
Feels like a catch 22. Any ideas?

P.S I am fairly new to all this

Hello again dizzyandwasted! :D

Can I just check that you definitely cannot get into Recovery mode... or even Download mode.

Recovery mode

Switch your phone off.

Press, and hold, Volume UP + Home (hard key) + Power.

Continue holding all 3 keys until Recovery appears.

Download mode

Switch your phone off.

Press, and hold, Volume DOWN + Home (hard key) + Power.

Continue holding all 3 keys until Download appears.

Hello again I might have to nominate you for hero of the year :p
Yes, I can get into recovery mode now thanks. I just wasnt holding the buttons for long enough...
However this hasn't sorted it. I tried to flash a SU binary that I downloaded from their website and put on my SD (su-bin-3.0.2-efghi-signed.zip) and I get the message: error in tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 0) installation aborted.
Have I downloaded the wrong binary?

I accept!

I guessed you weren't holding it long enough.

Rather than messing around, I was going to suggest that you flash the stock, secure kernel that came with the firmware you are on and then we can try rooting it again with the correct kernel.

If you go to your dial pad and input

*#1234#

Could you give me the first 3 lines of information.

Then could you go to...

Settings > About phone > Kernel version

and let me know what it says there.
