Quick summary: I had 2.1 JI6, upgraded to 2.2, then restored the 2.1 backup. Now phone wont boot, has "Swipe to unlock" but wont unlock.
Let me begin by saying that I feel like a complete idiot. I probably didn't do enough research and messed things up. I'll try to recount how I got here.
First, I bought my phone used. It was already rooted, and I think it was on the JI6 baseband.
Then I unlocked my phone using the instructions here (Captivate & Vibrant Unlock Instructions). Inserting an AT&T sim card seemed to work fine.
I later did a backup of my system and then upgraded to TeamWhiskey's Nero v3 ([ROM] Nero v3 - Team Whiskey - 12/22/10 - xda-developers). My goal was to try out Android 2.2. I downloaded the .zip to my internal SD card, then I used clockworkmod & recovery to upgrade.
The upgrade went fine, and I was able to boot into 2.2. But I was unable to get the calling/phone network working. It just kept saying "Searching" and "Please insert SIM". After trying many times to insert/remove SIM card, etc, I decided to go back to the stock setup to try again.
Here's where the trouble starts. I'm guessing I did the wrong thing here, but I went into clockworkmod and went to backup/restore, then Restore, then restored my "2010-12-23.04.04.50" backup, which I assumed was my previous 2.1 / JI6 install. That went through the restore process, then booted. It goes through the boot process (tmobile logo, then samsung "S" logo), but when it gets to the home screen I only see the status bar, the "Searching" text, and the "Swipe screen to unlock" + date.
I cannot slide the unlock screen (does not respond to touch). Every few minutes, it vibrates briefly and seems to re-show the status bar / lock screen, as if it restarted that software. I can still get to clockwork, but I can't get to anything else on the phone.
At this point I'd rather get other advice before charging on like an idiot. What should I do to fix the phone? My real goal is to get to Android 2.2 w/ touchwiz, close to stock. But I'll settle for getting my phone working again.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
UPDATE:
I managed to fix my phone. I finally remembered that the TeamWhiskey Nero .zip was still on the internal zip... all I had to do was re-install it from there. Done, booted up just fine into 2.2.
Step 2: I went to settings and checked the baseband version, it was "unknown version"... my baseband was corrupted. I went to the backup "nv_data.bin" file I had on the internal sdcard, copied that to /efs/nv_data.bak. If I copied it to /efs/nv_data.bin, it was immediately overwritten by the .bak. So I copied it to the .bak file instead, deleted the nv_data.bin, and it was copied over by the system. I'm connected to voice and it works fine.
I feel like such a hacker now that I've dug myself out of this hole
