My Dad and I are both upgrading our phones, I am 34, with a iphone 3gs, my Dad is , 64 and hd the Motorola razr v3. This will be a huge change in how he uses a phone. He is a very smart man, but, he does have a tendency to just click links, without knowing how authentic it is.
He uses my iphone too in frequently, to say he has a total knowledge of touch screen smart phones. Would this be a good "starter" smart phone for him? He just mainly wants to use it to email and make calls. He is very interested in the online and video capabilities.

It really depends on his level of desire to learn the device. If he doesn't mind spending some time with the OS learning it and realizing his user experience will get better as his knowledge of the device gets better, then I'd say it would be a great phone and he will love it.

If he likes the concept of an iPhone/Android, but would rather have the device work perfectly out of the box with little to no need to tweak or accept the learning curve, the phone might not be for him.



I love technology and surround myself with it so I don't mind not knowing much about something and learning it as I go, but my wife can't stand it getting something new that doesn't just work right out of the box without customizing and setting up so she prefers her iPhone.

I'm 65 (the 28th of this month), and am fine with Android devices. ;)

Age, along with gender, race, etc is not relevant. Motivation, to learn and to succeed, is all that matters.
 
As an aside, i picked up my wife's iPhone 3G yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks after having used (that's an understatement) the Inspire exclusively since i bought it.
Let me tell you, i have never been more under-whelmed by a phone!! We as humans get used to an amazing amount of capability in an amazingly short period of time. If you have been using the Inspire (or any recent Droid phone for that matter), i urge you to pick up an iPhone and play with it for a little bit. I cannot stress this enough: it PALES in comparison!

From your description, I think he won't have much of a prob. I gave this to my wife as her first Android phone and she is picking it up without much prob. It is pretty user friendly, after all.
Frisco summed it up pretty well.
Besides, your Dad figured out how to raise you as he went along, didn't he? lol
 
My dad is 62, and recently went from a flip phone to a Droid of some sort on Verizon. I was convinced that was a bad move for him as he doesn't do well with new technology, but he picked it right up and loves it... I think you'll be surprised just how quickly one,can learn something if they want to.

Thank you for all the responses! I will be buying it for him as a early Father's day present/thank you gift for going wth me to WonderCon!
I'm lucky enough that he will ask me for help , if he's stuck on something.
 
Not a problem. I'm 68 and held off replacing my Moto Razr because I never liked the iPhones (including the iPhone 4) enough to switch. Got the Inspire the first week it was out, before the manual was available, and just spent the first few days pushing all the buttons. My older eyes love the big screen, and the basic stuff was easy to use. The only thing that the Razr did more easily was voice dialing especially over bluetooth, which was a big issue for me in the car. The voice dialer on the Inspire still seems to make random decisions, but I downloaded Vlingo, and that is working fine.
 
*Update!-We both got the Inspires, and it hasn't been easy! I emailed him the actual manual and and he still hasn't read it. I have to show him every day how to check bookmarks, text's, v/m's. I chalk it up to, old fashioned "Dad stubborness" and his self-proclaimed forgetfulness. I have no problem teaching him about this phone! This phone is amazing!
