Due to work regulations I am now mandated to have my phone off. The primary reason for me wanting to keep it on is a trivial one so I've been rule compliant and kept it off at work. I like to use my newly acquired DX as a glorified watch and speedometer.
My question is this. If I put my DX in airplane mode, would it still ping cell towers? That is to say would my phone still send out information to data networks in such away to identify it as being on. Because the speedometer feature is a GPS feature I know airplane mode kills it. But, I'm not sure if inquiring minds could still tell my phone was on if I put it in airplane mode. I'd still like to use it as a glorified watch if possible.
Because of the nature of my work (passenger rail), I can't always be with the man controlling the train. So, I sometimes would use my phone to check the speed at which the train was moving as well as using the watch feature to approximate arrival times etc.
I've been told that one way this regulation would be enforced is by having phone records pulled and seeing if any calls were made / received and which towers were pinged as a person moves from point A to point B.
I've been reading about how some phones continually transmit information even when off, and I'm trying to figure out how the DX behaves. Is taking the battery out the only way to ensure this phone isn't pinging towers or is airplane mode enough?
