Can anyone help with this problem. Anytime I set my alarm for the morning for work it never goes off. Is it because it only goes off if the phone is on?

Yes. The phone needs to be on for the alarm to work.

I think there is an app which enables the alarm to work if the phone is turned off. Don't quote me on that though.
 
Not heard of an app that does that to be honest. I haven't found a work around to this. If its calls etc, you dont want in teh night, "Shhh auto-silencer" will change sound from ring - vibrate - silent between given times.

If its battery power, try airplane mode.
