Help Alerts on Txting

It seems that I only get the first sound alert when I'm txting a conversation. The subsequent txts don't generate an alert.

Any thoughts?

If the texting program is open and the screen is on, I believe you do not get a sound notification.

Any way to change this? Many times, I leave the phone sitting next to me when I txt to the same person regularly. I'd like to have the option to have it sound-notify each time a txt comes through.

Just back out of the conversation. Not all the way out of the text app but just the conversation. I have mine set for vibrate and sound. It still vibrates while in the conversation but no notification is played.

It doesn't vibrate, either.
