Source is out for this device. All we need is one person to step up unlocked and we can pull some images and get the ball rolling on CWMR from source, AND CM10, which ew know everyone wants. This device is very close in spec to the Photon Q and the source is almost identical, save the kernel. Join us on freenode, #oudhitsquad.

Hmm I have the developer edition of the phone which allow me to unlock with motorola.
 
im totally new to android but have been using computers since i could walk and am willing to help however i can. i have the normal locked bootloader model. i am not thrilled about potentially bricking my phone, but if it happens, well, that's life. i want root and its worth the potential 99 dollar replacement fee, still better than 550 for the dev edition IMO.
 
Seems that I've lost the ability to tether with FoxFi since switching from the Maxx to the M. Tried everything and it just hangs on "obtaining IP address". Hoping to get it working again when I root. I can still tether with a USB to my laptop to unsecure sites, but mostly I need it to tether my Nexus 7 tablet and it only has a micro USB.

We know about the dev version, although we tried to be first on it and missed. But, we're still interested in working with the locked version to get root. Might be that a bootstrap recovery has to be used to flash ROMs, however, I learned a few things about motorola kernels working with the Photon-Q that might help us with the locked bootloader. Give it time. In the meantime, try this root method:Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v12.7z

It uses an exploit common in ICS phones and works for a lot of devices. Let us know how it goes.

Awesome! I don't have an M yet, but I'm glad to hear you're working on getting it rooted.
 
There are updates to this tool pretty quickly actually. The latest is a bugfix and works on a few more devices. Also, I've seen different results using the tool as admin in windows, so maybe it's worth another shot. Make sure you have any available Motorola drivers installed before you try the process again.

1.Run the RunMe.bat as admin with the device unplugged.
2.Follow the prompts to plug in the device and run the application.

Rooting itself won't damage your phone, unless you screw up the method. What you do after you root is what has the potential to damage your phone.

Of course, this phone can't be rooted yet anyway, so no potential for damage yet (unless you're actively trying to find a root method).

Is rooting the solution to connecting my xbox controller with a dongle and usb adaptor? I can't figure out a way for android to recognize it. I have all the hardware i need.

USB OTG should work without root on most devices, but I have no idea if it does on the M or not.
