Help All these 2.1 threads are confusing me.

The basics are all in the thread [How To] - Root Android 2.1 DD03 - v5. But here are the steps broken down:

- First make sure you have flashed the 2.1 ROM.

- Flash the Recovery 2.1.3 (get it here) using the Sprint Update Tool. Do this over what you have. To do this put the Recovery ROM in the

I am *completely* new to monkeying with the OS on a PDA; and with everyone talking about "root", and "su"...I was afraid I couldn't install this with a Windoze machine.
...but can i (and the other shyer Dummies out there) get the same Step-by-Step-for-Dummies for finding/DLing/installing the 2.1 OS? (or a repost of this ...with a step 1A, 1B, etc. added?)
There seems to be several places/versions/sources....are these phone/machine specific... or just different people hacking the same thing?

I know the stuff over at SDX can be overwhelming but it is an ongoing process. If you read through it all you will discover that it is all just new versions of the same things.

These instructions are specific to the 2.1 beta for the Samsung Moment.

So on 2.1 what the hell are the little green dots I've started seeing places? I don't know what I hit but I accidentally hit a button that made my phone vibrate a command confirmation and now my mute slider is gone and there is a green dot there...
