He would need to check about 3 times tomorrow spread over the course of the entire day. I'm no longer tracking when my dead time is (as I don't have one with the new rom) but for me, outside of my dead time (which lasted about 3 and a half hours) my gps was always at least useable.

my dead time was all day any day, but at nights, the GPS Gods awake, and GPS works. Doesn't work great, but better than nothing.

i've seen it go 1 or 2. right now im getting about 3 or 4. mind you im in my room, with two computers on right infront of me (dont know if they cause interfearence)

Outside or in my car i lock on to 5 or so

Okay...that what I tend to get. I don't think I've ever seen more than 3 locks.

And now that I think about it, I've never tried to see what I get at night. If I remember I'll take a look tonight.

I've seen mine lock on to 8 during the day and other times, I can't get it to lock on to any. No rhyme or reason that I can discern. I'm not going to spend much time attempting to take a picture of the locks because you can believe me or not believe me. I am not involved in any kind of conspiracy.

It's not perfect. I doubt it ever will be. I hope the 2.2 firmware makes it better. I am confident it will.

I didn't buy the phone for it's GPS capabilities. It's an added perk for me. I would like to have it work optimally. It's not a show-stopper if it doesn't.

It is difficult for me to comprehend that someone that depends heavily on GPS abilities would buy a phone to meet that need. This phone plays video too, but if I want to enjoy a theatrical experience, I am going to a theater, not bitch about the short-comings of the phone.

This phone has tons of neat gadgets and I am going to enjoy the hell out of them. I am going to welcome any improvements to enhance my enjoyment of those gadgets.

These are my opinions. YMMV

Fair enough. Your opinion is welcomed and is valid. There are some of us though that appreciate the functionality an accurate GPS can add to a phone. A dedicated GPS unit is preferred, at least by me, for things like hiking/geocaching, but it can't come close to matching what can be done with a GPS coupled with data access. I'm not a fan of the social networking apps that use GPS, but I enjoy maps and like to be able to get traffic information and such. So, the problem with the Galaxy S GPS is much more important to me. As well, in this day and age, given the sophistication of phones today, it's not unreasonable for us to expect that a core function of a given phone performs much better than we've experienced so far on our Vibrants/Captivates/etc.

its 12:45pm central standard time and gps app is telling me in locked on to 3. for awhile i was locked on to 4. I dont feel like going through the hassle of taking a pic and uploading it, sorry. but at the moment im 3 - 4

Excellent post!

Agreed, I have dedicated GPS in my car and a Garmin for my SUV. I didn't buy the Vibrant for GPS either. I don't know of a "perfect" device available anywhere. Of the phones on the market now, I don't think you can do any better than the Android OS and of those the Vibrant is definitely one of the best available. After the upcoming updates it should be as good as it gets.

Thanks for the update. What was the accuracy? The typical 8-15 meters you've seen?

I have no doubt that the capabilities of our phones and future phone purchases will continue to amaze.

I do find the ability of my phone to find suggestions based on my location pretty handy. For that purpose, it doesn't need to be spot on. However, for that purpose, accuracy to within a few hundred feet is good enough. I can get that using exclusively wireless networks. Doesn't need the GPS at all.

I'm sure that there will be an app at some point that I personally will want a higher accuracy from the GPS. For now, it is adequate. I understand that it is not adequate for everybody. I understand that it is a show-stopper for some.

It's not that it works perfectly for me, it's just that I am satisfied with it. It meets my level of expectation. Sure, everybody's Galaxy S may have the same flaw. However, that doesn't mean that everybody should have the same level of dissatisfaction about it. I believe that I am not the only one that is satisfied.

In the grand scheme of things, I haven't lost one second of sleep over it. Sure, I'd like to see it fixed, but I am not going to picket in front of Samsung's or TMobile's office because of it.

Well I'm not a big fan of Sprint, but I have to hand it to them, they have been updating their latest phones like crazy. They are at it again, Epic has been out for a shorter period of time than the Vibrant, and it already gets an OTA MR.
How Do I Update The Software On My Sprint SPH-d700 (Epic 4G) Phone To DI07?

It would be nice if T-Mobile did this. I'm not asking you to fix major issues in 1 week, but T-Mobile, it would be nice for bi-weakly MR releases for tiny issues. If other carriers can do it, so can you. There is no reason why small issues should take months for MR.

Darn you Epic
Still waiting for GPS optimization.

Right on. I have no quarrel with that. :)

I understand what you're saying. But try this analogy. l have always bought separate stereo components; a dedicated box will always outperform a combo unit. However, if I did buy a combo record player/tape player/receiver, I would expect minimum functionality -- radio would work, tapes would play and so would records.

Same with this phone. I expect minimum functionality from the GPS and on that score, it has been a total failure. Lost signal, lockups, black screens, reboot-- it has never worked when I've absolutely needed it, including tonight, in a strange city, in the rain.

I'll wait a little while longer for the update and fix. But not forever. This is unacceptable. Samsung advertised a functional GPS. We should not expect or accept anything less.

Sounds like you got a bad phone, friend of friends.

I've gotten 3 - 6 locks all day today. and i deliver pizza. i decided to not use my LG GPS and use my vibrant instead today, for all 8 hours. Flawless. not one lock up or drop.

It's gotten progressively worse, so you are probably right. Had already decided to visit the T-Mo store when we get home next week. At least I won't need a GPS for the rest of this trip.

This is a universal thread to discuss the GPS on the Samsung Vibrant. If you are having trouble, need help or simply want to discuss the GPS this is the thread for it.

Please keep in mind the rules as well as the zero tolerance policy when posting.

All new GPS threads will be merged into this one.

i used to have problems with the gps, no gps at all, until i install "vibrant-JI2-gps" from Xdadevelopers, now the gps lock very fast, no more problems with gps, maps, navigation. (u need to have a root vibrant and have rom manager installed)

Have you tried to see how well it tracks? I've used that same install and have noticed, as have others, once moving the GPS drifts quite a bit.

so far so good, i don't use gps too much, so i can't give a 100%answer on this, but when i use it, it response good. I rather have this little issues that u are having, than not having gps at all.
maps=good
navigation=good
apps based on locations, u guess it, good too.

What's the latest rumor about when we can expect to see this 'optimization'?

probably mid to late october, but thats just a guess on my part. Honestly though, if we are expected to really get froyo, I would assume T-Mobile will just wait till November and couple the GPS optimization along with Froyo.

Personally I think 4 months of a defective phone is somewhat criminal.

Okay...thanks for that. I still need to remember to run a track on the way to/from work!
