My gps did not work at all on my replacement. I called samsung and the rep mentioned the gps fix was not released but until it is I could try a factory reset and it might work. I didn't until another member here mentioned a GSM reset and posted the dialer code for it (i used it as iwas going to return the phone). As I was outside the att store I checked google maps and it found me instantly.

Since sunday (when I did the GSM reset) I tried my gps everywhere and in locks on within seconds and usually within 10-30feet. Hopefully this keeps up.

I've seen the reset comment being mentioned several times, only to find out from the same poster days later it is broken again.

Then why are you even on the Android forums, are you just trolling? If you don't care what works and what doesn't then why are you on a forum that thrives on discussion of bugs, fixes, mods, etc.?

I am not sure that anyone else in this forum would agree with you that the only thing they expect to work on this phone is the phone. If you feel that way, quit trolling the forums and buy yourself a dumb phone from 1973 that made phone calls. Martin Cooper may have one you can buy.
I'm on the Android Forums to learn. I never said the only thing I expected to work was the phone. Interesting that I've offered no insults but many feel free to send them my way, and I'm the one called a troll.....I'm done with this rather unproductive thread. I do hope Samsung comes out with a GPS solution that makes you all happy, I'm going to continue to see what the Captivate can do, rather than fuss about what it can't.

You can get an app called GPS Test from the Market, that will show you how many satellites the phone sees and how many it locks on to. With that said, the update does not fix the GPS issue, there are numerous posts on this forum about this. You'll also find the same on Samsung's Facebook page as well as other popular Android sites. You're in the same boat as the rest of us, we don't have a working GPS

It appears that fresh boots seem to help the GPS for some people then things go back to being bad.
It's going to make it very hard to narrow this one down, if it ever gets fixed for everyone.
The devs at XDA seem like they're doing good work on it though.

Robert, welcome to the club, there are a large number of us in this boat. By the way, how long are you waiting and are you doing this outside? It takes several minutes for the phone to start seeing sats and if you try this by a window, nothing will ever show up. Lots of us here feel your pain.

Just thought I'd let you all know. The Gps doesnt seem to be working very well, and I am quite angry about the issue. I thought another post was in order.

Please use the other ongoing posts, we have plenty of exchanges already underway. No need to keep creating new ones, this does not help.

I didn't get the update (running Cognition), but as I understand it, you don't have to use the dialer code to get into LBS Test Mode any longer. Now it's a shortcut you can add to the home screen, right? Could this be the "GPS Update" they were posting about. (And if so, it probably would have been better not to say anything.)

Not quite. The dialer code doesn't work, but in LauncherPro, you can add an "activities" shortcut to the LBS Test Mode.

Whoa! You need to give a warning that this entirely erases the internal /sdcard so make sure your titanium folder is backed up! Also, for the first time ever at 7:30 this morning my phone turned itself off by itself and I think it may be related to the gsm reset. :(

For those of you having a problem with the captivate in real world testing please read you won't be sorry.

Guys I'm running a stock version of the Captivate, I did the update hoping to fix the GPS myself and to my dismay it fixed nothing and actually made my phone run worse. I called Galaxy S support and after some painstaking hold times I finally got thru to a level 3 support guy. I told him that the update downloaded and installed over the air properly, the phone rebooted on its own and that I was having the problems I stated earlier. He had me back up my phone (which it turns out I didn't need to as far as music and pics went) and then had me open the dialer and enter *2767*3855#. This immediately took the phone into what he called a "GSM Reset", this was different than the factory reset, it took all of 3 minutes if that and the phone was back up and running. He got off the phone with me and told me to call him back if there were any problems persisting. I immediately went outside, the gps got a lock in 8 seconds. I couldn't believe how fast it locked. My contacts were synced with at&t address book, as soon as I opened the contacts app the phone asked if I wanted to sync my phone, within 5 minutes every one of my 178 contacts had downloaded back into my phone. While my address book was syncing I noticed the pictures I was assigning to my contacts were reappearing. I checked my gallery and every single pic that was on the phone was still there, I then checked the music and all my music was there too. I immediately noticed how much faster the phone was running. I went to the adroid market, hit the menu button, selected downloads and all the apps that I had purchased and downloaded were there waiting for me to reinstall. I downloaded over the 3G network 30 applications in about 8 minutes. I think the update actually "clocked up" the processor, I can't believe how responsive the phone is, nor can I believe how much faster the internet is running.
Being skeptical that it was a temporary fix, I shut the phone off and restarted it, the gps locked again in 3 seconds this time. I tried the navigator built into the google maps app and it was flawless. It held a lock for 45 minutes straight. I then shut the phone off still skeptical restarted it a few times, got back in my car and drove home an hour from work, I intentionally didn't drive the route suggested to see how fast the phone would realize i was off course, everytime I "missed" a turn I looked at the phone and within 5 seconds it was rerouting and choosing a new route. I just checked google maps in my driveway and yes I was standing in my driveway! It took all of 4 seconds for my phone to tell me that, oh and wifi was turned off.

Trust me, follow the simple instructions and do a GSM reset, you won't be sorry.

I work at Sprint and it should come as no surprise that we watch this forum very closely and use it to help identify key issues and complaints so we can research and provide fixes. The GPS issues being reported are no exception. There is a lot of discussion about specific scenarios/habits that may make this issue more prevalent. If any of you are willing we'd love to have answers to some of these questions. I know some are simple so don't be too hard on me. Thanks to everyone for the feedback so far.

1. Is Wifi turned on and in use when the problem occurs?
--No.

2. Do you have both the Network Assisted and GPS Location options checked in the Location settings?
--Yes

3. Is the customer using the device outdoors with a clear view of the sky to allow a GPS Satellite location?
--Yes, San Diego...what are clouds?

4. Which application(s) are you using for location when the issue occurs?
--CardioTrainer

5. Are you seeing an error message (i.e. Searching for GPS Location, Unable to Locate) or a specific behavior on the device?
--No errors; just continuously looking for location

6. Are you seeing this behavior while stationary or are you moving or both (i.e. in a car, tram, train)?
--Both

7. Does the issue occur in one specific geographic location but not in others? (i.e. home, work, other?)
--No

Did anyone one of those posts contain the actual statement from Samsung that I started this thread with? I've looked, and other than the screenshot from me, nobody has referenced the fact that Samsung claims its fixed. Quite the opposite, The first thread you pointed out even claims that the update isn't supposed to contain the GPS fix.

Again, if I missed it mea culpa, hard to keep up with 100 pages of breaking news. Please point out which of the many existing threads you'd like me to restrict my activities to and I will.

Thank you for calling my 'argument' (it isn't an argument, it's an opinion) 'stupid'. I won't return the favor regarding your opinion. The fact of the matter is my opinion is that I purchased a cell phone that has additional features. I own a GPS. I own a camera. I didn't buy the Captivate for those features. What I did buy it for it does very well. That is my 'stupid' opinion, YMMV.

Let me start by saying people who post and say deal with it..its just a phone are morons...this is a product like any other product..if it includes a feature it better darn work. I also love it when they post if your gps doesnt work go buy a separate gps...idiots.

So you r ok with your gps not working since u bought the phone just for making calls?? why did u even spend the extra $$ to buy this phone if u own and gps and a camera and dont need any of these features?? now thats stupid!

I understand there are those out there who say "be patient." Or perhaps that GPS isn't that important to them. But the "It's a phone, deal with it" crowd are the very definition of fanboydom.

I can't see myself returning this phone and going back to the fruit just because of GPS issues. The phone is great and the pros outweigh the cons. It gives me directions from point A to B when using navigation but it wont track. Not a big deal. Apple still can't even give us Widgets with jailbreaking.

The GPS issue not only needs its own sub-forum, it needs a ringmaster as the topic has, in fact, become a circus.
