Just thought I'd share my scary story lol. Some of you may or may not have observed, I've been one of the types going into this to read and research and make sure I know what the hell I'm doing, and what sort of results to expect from it before I changed anything serious. Well, today I was in the process of finally making a new nandroid backup of my latest setup, and I was trying to do a nandroid + ext backup, except it wasn't working. For some reason, recovery just cannot ever do anything with the sd-ext partition. I can even mount it through ADB, but cannot mount it directly in recovery on the phone. suffice it to say it makes sense that it wouldn't know how to back it up either.
So during the attempt to run a nandroid + ext backup, it stopped after a minute and threw an error, saying to run nandroid-mobile.sh via ADB. so I looked up what nandroid-mobile.sh is and I found out it's just another way to do backups and restorations. I created a backup through there, but there's no way that I could tell if it was supposed to be both the phone and sd-ext, or just the phone, or what. As a second resort, I also created a regular nandroid backup, and hung on to both of 'em.
I wanted to find out if I was indeed creating an image of sd-ext, so I would know if I had a good backup later on when I actually needed it or not. So I then wiped the phone, and because I couldn't wipe sd-ext normally, I just re-partitioned the card after backing up the rest of my SD contents. I then restored the ADB-made backup, and tried to boot.
BOOTLOOP! Okay........*pulls battery and puts in, holds buttons to boot recovery, wipes phone again, restores regular nandroid backup, reboots*
.....BOOTLOOP! Oh shit. shit shit shit shit shit.........*pulls battery and puts in, boots to recovery, wipes phone again, grabs the last known good backup, restores, reboots*
......BOOTLOOP! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!! Okay what now....repair sd-ext and install a fresh copy of a rom....*repeats the above, wipes, installs Joneidy's latest Sense, reboots*
.....SUCCESS! *whew*.
Was it just a really terrible terrible idea to use a nandroid backup that was expecting contents in sd-ext with a freshly partitioned SD, or what?
That shit was scary, and I'm very grateful that after praying to God and not giving up, I managed to resolve it quickly. lol. I have a spare phone, but it's not android, and just......no. Glad I didn't have to take that route.
