Root Alpharev N1 or Data++ ?

Manxminx

Newbie
I've come a long way in the past couple of days since my Headache thread :D I'm getting used to adb commands etc. Managed to clear out a lot of progs I don't use, such as twitter etc.

After further research I decided not to partition my SD card due to the drawbacks, but instead use Alpharev & a custom partition size.

I've sucessfully s-off'd, using the excellent guide at Gain S-Off On HTC Desire GSM With AlphaRev 1.8 Custom HBOOT

Now I'd like to change the partition table size to either N1 or data++.

However, alpharev says that:

The below modified partition tables are for Bravo phones with OLD nand layout currently ONLY. Do not attempt to flash these on other phone models. Bravo PVT4 (with the new NAND layout) is not yet supported at this time for these modified partition layouts. We will update these at a later time.
Now, we know my phone is PVT4, but thanks to Rastaman we've found that my phone has a 20,000 erase size so it has the old NAND chip. Therefore, I think I should be OK flashing a modified partition layout?

To recap, N1 gives 149 - 98 - 203
data++ gives 180 - 10 - 261

To be honest, neither are ideal, I'd rather have a slightly larger cache than data++ gives, but hey-ho, unless someone can give me a way to decide my own partition sizes, I'll have to go with one of the above choices.

Although data++ gives the larger data partition size, the problem is that:
the /cache partition is too small to hold Radio flashes from recovery. You can however flash the radio just fine with 'fastboot flash radio radio.img'. Just extract the radio.img from the radio update.zip beforehand.
I guess it would be easier to flash the radio before I flash data++.

Are there any other drawbacks with having only 10Mb cache? What happens if one runs out of cache space, will the OS automatically delete old cache?

Also, does anyone know of a good guide to flashing N1 or data++ ? The best I've found so far is at How to increase desire internal storage? - CyanogenMod Forum

P.s. Believe it or not, I've not actually made or received any phone calls or texts yet. But then again, I'm still waiting for my gold number to arrive in the post.

Gaming would be effected by small cache partition.

What would first be useful to know is how much of your /system partition is actually being used.

Quick System Info from the market will tell us that. Get to it load ;)

Also, if you're interested, you can actually design your own partition layout. Its a bit more hassle -you need a custom clockworkmod recovery and patch boot on your rom. Also if you flash new roms, you have to patch boot on that before booting into it.

I used to use custom MTD layouts and it worked well for me. Let me know if you want further info, once we know your partition size.

Hia Dan, I don't really do gaming, so that's not a problem.

System Storage 250MB, 149MB free (that's after uninstalling a heck of a lot of stuff I don't use & don't want.

Custom MTD would be interesting, but I'll take the easy route for now thanks!

Btw, 37 MFLOPS, and that's without trying! Cool!

Hmm see, both those tables still waste a lot of space.

To be honest, custom mtd isn't really harder. There's just a bit more to it.
