Alternative HTC Hero charger?

its does work, i had the same thing, wanted to charge my hero at work without my HTC lead, fellow worker got a standard mini usb, i said "its a different shape it won`t work" he then proceeded to put the mini usb into my phone and it works fine. its the same with most htc phone,

There's no difference. The supplied charger is just a standard 11pin mini USB cable that goes in to a 3 pin UK plug.

I also charge mine at work via a bog standard USB cable.

The technical specs on the HTC website even say it's a standard mini USB connection.
 
Every day's a school day.

I too thought it wouldn't fit but I have just charged mine with a ps3 controller lead.
 
I've had HTC phones for a while now, and most of HTC's old chargers have the standard mini usb plug (even tho the phones have extUSB for headset/power), only recently did the charges have the extUSB plugs (maybe so they fit better?)
 
Never has so much mis-information and denial covered one thread, so quickly.

The first time I saw HTC use this connection I thought, I bet it's just a modified mini-USB. Sure enough when I got my Hero I decided to try a couple of mini-USB cables I already owned and sure enough it works perfectly to connect to the computer to sync / data transfer, or just to charge the phone.

I only use the official cable it came with to charge it at night, other than that I have a miniUSB to sync on my PC and a miniUSB in my car to charge....

To think people thought this was a different connection altogether, or even more hilarious, Firewire 1394..... lol!

I wish some people would check out their info!

I'd say it's s fair mistake by most people. One of the first things you learn as a child is a square brick will not fit in a round hole.

But, of course. Assumption is the mother of all f##k ups.
 
Well Gentlemen, I have to ask one maybe obvious question. Will all mini USB supply the same voltage. After seeing this link I got up and tried my new HTC Hero with a mini USB and I'm here to say it DOES fit as well as the original cord. But my hesitation is the voltage. This car charger is for a Motorola phone and I'm just curious about the voltage. I have a Jabra Bluetooth device and it's USB Mini but I'm hesitant to plug it in 'till you guys weigh in on this voltage question. I know I'm probably just scared but I don't want to fry this new device that I dearly love.........

You won't fry it. I'm not an electrician but I'm fairly confident that you if you can plug it in to your mains, you can use your car charger :)
 
USB is a standard 5v DC, I use the one car charger for all my mini-usb devices (HTC Touch Diamond, Hero, Sony Reader, PSP and archos) usually the only thing that changes is the ampage and this will only affect your charge time. My charger is about 950mA and it charges my Diamond faster than the AC charger, I have been using it for about 16 months and never had a problem. Im about to fit a permanent USB rail in my car so I can charge my hero at the same time as any other device including the wife's iphone.

Exactly stated above. The mA (milliamps) may be different but the voltage is 5v. My Eris charger is 1000 mA, and I have 2 different motorola chargers, one is 850mA and the other is 550mA, and the computer USB only pushes 500mA and they all work. Difference is the charge time.

I have to say, it's difficult not to mock if you go through the thread and realise how many people didn't bother reading other replies and insisted that the connector doesn't take mini USB...seriously people READ THE THREAD BEFORE REPLYING lol.

Or at the very least, try connecting the damn thing before claiming it won't fit!
 
I just tried and found out that even Mini USB-B cable can be used to charge Hero from its original charger unit... also it serves all the purposes of its original cable, including charging thru laptop, transferring - syncing to pc.. etc..
 
Hey guys although I'm using a mini usb cable my hero refuses to charge? Can anyone enlighten me? It'll charge about 15% in 6 hours... help!?! lol

What are you actually charging it from, i.e. what is the other end of the USB cable plugged into? The charging speed will depend on the amount of current that can be supplied.

Many laptops, for example, wont supply much power from their USB ports, in order to save their own batteries. So your phone will charge, just very slowly, as you're seeing.
