Alternatives to Fire

Thanks for the responses...

I would like to clarify some things.
1. I would like to add my own content, not Amazon content. I have movies and books from alternative sources that I will be using.
2. I live in Canada, but have access to a USA mailbox.
3. I have time, I'm not going out tomorrow to buy a tablet, I'm just looking for suggestions for tablets to research.
4. Thanks for all the replies and advice.

Now I understand. You can hook the Kindle Fire to your PC and copy content to it. The Kindle eReader can read .mobi format. Calibre is a great ebook management system. It will convert non-drm ebooks to any format you want. It will also convert and copy ebooks to any supported ereader. I use Calibre to covert and copy .lit and .epub books to my Kindle.

If the Kindle Fire ereader app works like the Kindle, it will be no time that Calibre will support the Kindle Fire.

I'm also hoping that the Kindle Fire will able the see and copy .mobi books stored on the Amazon Cloud Drive.

I don't know about movies.

Is anything really in the Kindle Fire's league? As an Amazon experience device @$199 with a perpetual $79 per year service contract for Amazon Prime, nothing compares to that. No other manufacture backs their hardware like this. Heck, even HTC Sense is not really supported by HTC since they don't have a Sense experience portal for all the Sense UI devices they make. So, it's just lame for these other manufactures to make stuff without a hosting service like Amazon is providing as compared to Apple and Google.

Nook color and nook tablet?

I played with the Nook Tablet today, and to be honest, the expandability of it (along with double the RAM) give the Fire a serious run for its money.

Whoa! Are you saying that the purchase of a Kindle Fire includes a free lifetime subscription to Amazon Prime?

You get ONE month free; then prime is $79 each year. A bargain, Netflix is $95.88yr and does not compare with what you get from Prime.
Comparing netflix against Prime streaming quality.

I looked into what you get to stream for free with Prime and was unimpressed. I'm sticking with Netflix.

Does Amazon Prime have a specific category for independent films like Netflix does?

Does anyone know if the Amazon Fire can play Netflix movies?

Steve

What do I get from Prime if I don't order from Amazons store?

Personally, I wouldn't jump onto the KF until it gets rooted/ROM'd. If you're ok with the limitations that Amazon built into it, it's a good choice. Just don't expect it to do half of what all the other tablets do.

It is rooted. We're just waiting on roms now. :)

Too many qualifiers. Kindle Fire is not for you.

Look at the ASUS Transformer. Prices are falling and will continue to do so when Transformer Prime is released, mid December 2011.

Kindle Fire is a great media/Android device. I love mine. That said, my ASUS Transformer is a heavyweight Android device, with far more capability (bluetooth, GPS, SD Card, USB functionality, Honeycomb) than the Fire, and is as great a value as the Fire.

If I could have just one device, it would be the ASUS Transformer. My Prime membership would be just as useful with the Transformer.

Your call. Your money.

Not quite, because you wouldn't have access to the Kindle Owner's Lending Library ... but admittedly that is a small thing. :)

But why did you buy a Fire when you already had the Asus Transformer?
