Root am I loosing my root ??

net-wiz

Hi I rooted my commando right after the 2.3.3 update with Zergrush. I worked great for some time, but now tethering app report no root access. Neither Barnacle or Wireless Tether work any longer. Other root depending apps like setcpu and addfree still work great. Do I need to re-root? and if so should I use Zergrush or SOC?

Thanks

You're not losing root, first of check superuser for updates, secondly redownload the offending apps and see if they work. Third, reboot and try again.
The only way you can lose tour is if an update takes it away (I foresee this happening with the next update from Verizon, the exploit currently used to gain root was patched back in November.)

Have you performed a full reset? My phone will completely loose root if I factory reset. I do not know why, it's not supposed to happen but it does.

rjglenn, I've seen you post previously that a factory reset removes root access from your commando. I did a factory reset on mine (three times the same day actually) back in November/December whenever the last update came out, and the root access didn't go away, and the update would not run. In particular the Superuser app was still there after the reset. So since the unrooted, update objective wasn't met I just restored everything using the Titanium backup I had made before the reset. The phone still works great. I'm just curious why my results are different from yours.

Would it have something to do with not using a blank sd card, but doing the reset with the card I had in the phone when rooted? I have a 16 gb card in it that I brought forward (reformatted) from my Rock. Would it make a difference if I used the 8 gb card that came with the phone?

It seems to me that the ability to go back to unrooted stock if desired would be a good thing unless it meant that one could no longer root.

interesting fact of the day: superuser is a system app. Factory resets only wipes /data. I don't know how rjglenn managed to get rid of superuser (unless it was in /data, not /system)

SD card should not matter.

Easiest way to unroot currently is by using superoneclick's unroot option.

Well, I just looked and yes, it is in /data/app. I wonder how I managed that and I suppose I need to fix it

I did never reset the phone. Rebooting it a few times didn't correct it either. I reinstalled wireless tether with no changes. I downloaded Barnacle and while starting it, I never get an SU acknowledgement for root access and the app doesn't show up under allowed apps. Wireless Tether on the other hand is in the access list and SU is set to automatically allow access. I even purchased the SU elite. No go so far.

Thanks for helping!

Well, it turned out that some hardware upgrade form M70 to M80 was done what in turn modified the rooting. I re-rooted it with the ZergRush and all is well.

Thanks.
