Have been thinking about getting a new tablet and came across the nexus...however from what i can see there are a few issues......

  • not sky go compatibale (yet)
  • not bbc i player compatible (cant download progs and watch offline as u can on IOS)
  • no flash (not that big a deal as everything going HTML5 soon)
  • limited to 16gb storage, is this enough?
  • no 3g connectivity

going to hold off and see what happens regarding these issues before I buy I think.

Well I am sure the apps will be updated in due time. And like you said, no flash won't be an issue forever. So it just comes down to the two bottom bullets. Basically, what is your usage environment. If you are always on the go, the N7 isn't the best tablet in the world. Wi-fi only and small storage is an at home combination, where you have access to other, larger media storage devices. That being said, OTG cables allow you to hook up USB sticks for fast media swapping (and even playing it off the sticks), and if you have a phone with hotspot, you can tether for data when away from wi-fi. But otherwise, the OS is rock solid, the screen is beautiful, and its smooth as butter. And you can't beat the price.

you may want to check out the new Kindle Fire versions that was announced yesterday, the big one has cell phone service option and they all start at 16 gigabytes of storage and free unlimited cloud storage. I have the first Kindle Fire and it's nice, just not as fast as the Google Nexus 7.

As Ant mentioned, the OTG cables will allow you to extend your storage data but you will need to be rooted, as for flash there is a around for that in this forum, tethering like Ant mention is always an option, I am sure the BBC player will work sooner rather than later, and the same person that posted the you tube video reviews for the flash work around might know more about the BBC Player.

there are a few post here , and one got the BBC player to work, Getting Flash to work (

Below is the member I mentioned, he has many you tube post here on the site and shows a bunch of features, I will post his lite review and then you can search his other threads and post

thanks for the help guys.

Mainly want to use tablet in work where there is no wifi, but can get very limited mobile network conection. ideally I would like to store a few films, books etc on the device for quiet shifts on work. Just a bit concerned if 16gb is enough for this. The wife already has a 16gb Ipad2 which is full already.

been looking at the amazon kindle fire hd, just wondering what the internet browsing is like on this and whether you can view things like iplayer on it?

Well the kindle fire HD is much more locked down to the Amazon experience. I would check the Amazon app store for the apps you are interested in.

Cant help with the sky thing.
You can get iplayer working, just side load flash on to it.
Flash - see above
If 16gb isn't enough root it and use stickmount to mount usb drives. If you just want read only access you don't even need to root - there is a thread in this forum on the subject. Or use cloud storage.
No 3g ? fine - just tether to your phone. One bill instead of two...

there are rumours of a 3g model, but nothing concrete.

If you have no WiFi and limited cell connection, then a tablet that has 3G/4G won't work any better than tethering from your phone.

The biggest reason I use Android phones and tablets is because of the open source OS. One of the gripes about the Nexus 7 when it came out was the lack of a camera app, and within days of release, a developer made a camera app. The lack of SD card slot was also overcome very quickly without rooting by another excellent developer, and with rooting, you can transfer files back and forth to SD cards, thumb drives, etc.

The Kindle Fire devices are severely limited by Amazon, so I doubt they would fit your needs at all, unless you're just looking for a Kindle reader/Video viewer. This is just my opinion of course, as I don't know exactly what your needs are.

Yeah I'm definitely leaning more to the nexus, although it does seem to have a few issues that would effect me personally, (16gb limit, Iplayer issues and sky go at the moment)

Well at least they are working on getting the sky go app ready. Frustrating though, the things should just work and not involving rooting or side loading flash etc.

Yah, really. Google messed the Nexus 7 up by not having all the apps developed in time for its release :rolleyes:

It's not Google's fault that Flash isn't natively supported, Adobe are simply not providing mobile support anymore.

Sideloading makes it sound like there's some complicated process to undergo to enable flash when in reality it's no more complicated than downloading a restaurant menu. It's a 30 second download and install.

I agree its not that much of an issue, and that is quite easy to do. In general not having flash isn't a problem. It is only a problem now that you have to sideload it to run BBC iPlayer. In a market where there are tablets that work out of the box it counts as a point against the nexus I feel.

The problem is that it's the iPlayer app that's outdated where the Nexus is too up to date for its own good.

I agree that it's very annoying waiting for developers to update their apps, Google are always going to have this problem with Nexus devices because other Android devices simply aren't updated quickly enough. There's very little incentive for developers to rush out a Jelly Bean update when most devices haven't even got onto ICS yet!

Yeah that pretty much sums it up really.
