Help am i screwed?

i bought a used captivate to use with a straight talk sim

just got it today and when i plug my usb cable into the phone and the pc it charges and gives me the options for mass storage, kies, etc and on the phone it acts as if it's connected but my PC refuses to recognize it

i can't update it, unlock it, root it, and since i can't root it i can't make it so i can sideload apps which to me makes it useless as much more than a glorified mp3 player

anyone have any ideas?

I'm wondering if the kies program needs updating. The Samsung drivers for the PC connection may not be current.

is it possible it's my cable?... i just had it pop out 3 times while handling the phone while it's plugged in

looking closer the angle of the top and the slightly recessed usb port looks like it's keeping the cable i have (from my optimus v) from going in to well because the plastic bit on the plug is too thick... the plug on the charger that was sent with it (motorola branded) is not as bulky and plugs in more securely

i'm going to look for a different micro usb cable and report back

well i dug out another cable which fits more securely... now my computer says "usb device not recognized" most of the time...

occasionally it will get as far as installing drivers (which always fails)

The captivate was always very fussy about the USB cable. If possible try to get a hold of a Samsung cable. Some have has some luck beveling the insulation around the micro usb connector so it fits in the phone more snugly, but I always needed to use the OEM cable for reliable connections.

this is as far as it has managed to get

The Captivate requires Kies Mini. I think the correct drivers are included with that installation.
