Root Amazing Droid performance increase

Drat. I switched from JDLFG to Slayher kernel so I could use swapper2, but then my Droid started to reboot randomly and would always have to cycle through at least 3 reboots to load CM 6. So I switched back to stable JDLFG but no swapping. According to prior posts JDLFG supports swapping but I guess I am doing something wrong because swapping is not working although I periodically see messages that swapper2 is granted root permission. Anybody have any ideas?

Did you happen to have your wifi on? You need to install the wifi fix right after you install the Slayher kernel

Yes, I use wifi in the house since 3G is iffy. I am not aware of a wifi fix. I'll have to find it if I can. THANKS!!!

you never did answer my question about HOW you determined swapper is not working under a JDLFG kernel, as i have said many times, it works for me. AND I hope your using his most current 32.25 kernels I talked about earlier and not the older stuff on that thread of his.

okay, I read back to one of your older posts where you printed the "info" screen from Swapper and see some of your FAIL notations.

So, have you ever hit the phones menu button while in Swapper and then hit "info"? do you see Memory and Swap data? Does it show the size of the Swap file you set and show numbers in the Used and Free rows? And you said you can see the Swap file on your SD card? if you can see those 2, it would seem to me it is making and using the swap. if you do not, that goes along with the FAIL notices. But you did say you DID see the swap file on the SD card so what about the Memory and Swap data under "info".

Sir Villhelm, I downloaded the Slayher kernel and the wifi fix from the link you sent me. I have have wifi and swapper2 is working. Thanks for your help.

Lock-n-Load, I did look at the info on swapper2. It said Swap:0. Used 0. Free:0. I have the Slayher kernel now and swapper2 info shows Swap:26616. Used 12032. Free:14584. This suggests to me that it didn't work with JDLFG but it does work with Slayher. Please tell me if I am missing something. ANd if I failed to respond to your previous attempt to help me, I am sorry but I must have missed the post.

I would rather use JDLFG since it is very stable for me. With Slayher, it requires 2-3 iterations through boot before CM6 loads, and once it completely froze up and I had to remove and reinsert the battery to get it to reboot.

1. if you show Swap:0. Used 0. Free:0 AND yet can see the swap file on the SD card AND get those FAIL errors, I would say that yes, it is not working. you should see numbers over than Swap:0. Used 0. Free:0.

2. you know the copy of Swapper 2 you have IS working since it works with the Slayer Kernel. so yes, it seems the JDLFG is the issue

3. I would pick another kernel of JDLFG from his most recent (bottom of his thread) 32.25 dated kernels and retry one of those. If that does not work, it kind of tell me there is something outside that is influencing it as I know for a fact the 1.2 speed 32.25 dated (most current) JDLFG kernel works for me. I know people had issues with JDLFG but that is because they tried the oooold versions.

What do you mean by this? Your phone reboots 2 - 3 times before it comes up fully? I never had this problem, strange.

When the phone is turned on or manually rebooted, I get the M logo, then it goes away and appears once more, then loads CM6. Sometimes it goes away and appears twice. I've tried adjusting the clock speed from the typical 1100 MHz I use down to 600 mHz but it doesn't matter, it still cycles. It is frustrating and suspicious.

The JDLFG "1200MHz Kernel for Any ROM" I used was 2.6.32.9JDLFG-LITHMOD gjdlfg@ubunto #40. I don't know its date. It was downloaded from ROM Manager.

I just now downloaded and installed v.32.25 Sept 4 2010 but still get 0,0,0 from swapper2->info. It shows up in settings as 2.6.32.9JDLFG-LITHMOD gjdlfg@ubunto #32.

I suppose I have to decide whether I want swapper2 with a suspicious kernel or JDLFG without swapper2. Guess I can't have it all!

Thanks!

I get my kernel direct ALWAYS. look at post #77 as that is what I refer to when I say get the latest kernels.

but man, I am out of ideas. there must be something more to your setup like CM6 because the kernel you said does not work works for me and I do not run CM6 and we both run Swapper.. so, think about that.

as for your comment "I suppose I have to decide whether I want swapper2 with a suspicious kernel or JDLFG without swapper2. "

that is such an EASY answer.. stability rules and that means a solid, fast reliable kernel. Forget Swapper. Hell, through all of this, I am not even sure it has made a damn bit of difference, but my solid fast JDFLG kernel does and I see that every second I use the phone.

I am expecting to use JDLFG and drop swapper2. But I still have one mystery...how does jdlfg #32 differ from #40??? These are the numbers that appear in the Settings->About phone..Kernel version. They are both 2.6.32.9JDLFG-LITHMOD gjdlfg@ubunto; #32 is from Lock-n-Load's link, #40 is from ROM Manager.

Are you all still using this app? I was using it for a couple weeks, then started seeing A LOT of FCs and phone being unresponsive. I tried setting swappiness anywhere from 1 to 100 (left it at default 10 at first).

I also tried sizes 32, 48 and 64 MBs. I actually saw a lot of instances when the swap file was used 100% when set at 32 and 48 MBs, but never maxed out the 64 MB swap file (came close a couple times though). Every one of those times my internal memory still had 2-3 MBs free. I think it should expel all internal memory before it moves to the swap file, but even if I set swappiness to 1, it still seemed to use the swap file a lot.

So what's working best for you all? Still just leaving everything default (10 swapiness 32 MBs)?

I have no idea if this thing does a damn thing.. but I have been using it at the settings I listed earlier.

Perhaps you don't do as much multitasking with your phone as I do. I am constantly switching apps and using swap has greatly improved the performance of my phone. In particular, I no longer get those horrible delays when switching back to the home screen (LauncherPro), switching between apps is quicker and I can have more open browser "windows" without everything slowing to a crawl.

On the other hand, when I had my swap partition set at 32MB, the phone would become unbearably slow as the swap partition came close to the 32MB limit. Reducing swappiness to 5 helped slow this down and increasing the partition size to 64MB helped even more.

It's sad to have to do this on a phone as nice as the Droid, but Motorola did release it with too little RAM.

installed the Swapper 2 app. Swapper 2 is set to start on boot and use the partition rather than using a swap file.

Do you know if there is a app like this that you can install, and the app repartitions the SD card and then starts using the new swap file.
I cant repartition a drive to save my soul, I have tried many times (and I mean many) in the past and can't make heads or tales out of it.
Dual boot on my PCs only works because Linux has a auto partitioning process that handles that and reformatting the drive for linux.
I really want to get a larger swap file for my tablet but know short of having a app that does the whole thing I will never get it done because partitioning stuff just escapes me.
Ok, forget it. I just looked at the app, It requires rooting the device. Have no clue how to do that either.
It sucks that you have to root for everything that makes the device better, and half of the stuff is beyond me.

I believe either ROM Manger or CWM recovery has an partitioning option, but you need to be rooted to use either of these programs.

I gave up fighting my OG Droid and moved on to a Galaxy Nexus.
