Help Amazing/Horrid Camera - Pet Peeve

i am bothered that the camera is slow, and it sucks that it doesn't have a flash, but also..it's a cell phone. if you REALLY needed a device to take good pictures on, why wouldn't you just get a digital camera?

Uh...it's a phone. You use it for making phone calls. Having a built-in camera is icing on the cake.

The reason for the delay is the same as for all low-end digital cameras. It has to focus, and inexpensive cameras do not focus quickly. At least it focuses. Most phone cameras have a fixed focus lens.

As for a zoom - you people need to get a photographic education. Digital zoom sucks ass...unless you find pixelation attractive.

@mr_strat - I have to politely disagree. A phone implies that is the primary purpose of this device. I certainly use my G1 for a data device first.

And while I have agreed with everyone, this is not a dedicated camera, I have used quite a few other camera phones which do "snap" the photo when the button is pressed. (the G1 is still a consumer grade device, and that means, when I click it should snap the photo.)

Stop by any mobile store, pick up their phones and go to the camera app, most manage to snap a photo on button click.

I am really hoping that Android's software is causing the issue since that would be fixable, whereas poor quality HTC hardware is not obviously.

I agree with you on zoom. I was just commenting on how nice it would be to have some abilities.

I have a Voyager (still), and we've (Voyager users) long complained about how our camera performs, for both still and video.

My old phone, "The V", snapped them about a second late of the button press. This phone does that as well if I turn autofocus off. If I turn it to one or two step, it takes a few or several seconds.

Sounds the same here. Can you guys at least turn the autofocus off?

As far as picture quality, honestly between no focus, 1 step or 2 step the difference is minimal.

Either way though, it doesn't take on press. Which I hate.

:(

Phases - Without snapphoto there are "NO" settings for this application/camera regarding photo quality. (size, type, focus, indoor/outdoor). Snapphoto helps a lot with that.

As for the time from press to capture - I just aimed my g1 at a darker corner under my desk, but with a light up USB cable, providing some light, and the shades open in the room. It took 5-6 secs for the two photos I took to be captured. The photos were excellent, but again that is a long time.

I then aimed out the window where daylight is pouring in and the delay was about 1-2 sec. Slow, but livable.

true. but sometimes its them random "kodak" moments where you dont have a camera available but everyone is mostly likely to always carry their cell so thats their last option. to me that would be last option to. unless i were to have the sony ericsson cybershot camera phones.

as for me, i dont plan to take much pic with it. other than to use the camera as bar code reader for met to shop prices when i go back and buy books for my classes. hahah.

the odd part is before buying the G1, I thought the camera was going to be better than the Iphone as shopsavvy is able to run on the G1 but not the Iphone. But the Iphone is actually much better.

one thing that can be done via apps, I would think, is to get rid of the awkward button. Someone needs to create an app that simply incorporates the shutter button into the touchscreen, like the iphone...

@greener - Write to the SnapPhoto author, he is very friendly and has a lot of the cupcake update in his roadmap for the software according the the FAQ. On screen capture button was not listed so suggest it!
