How do these deals work-- logistically speaking? Like I had to go talk to Verizon (could have done it on the phone) to get the account set properly. I don't see how this could be easy going through Amazon. Family account with four lines.

When I got my M, I had the option of going through Amazon, Verizon online, an authorized Verizon dealer, or a Verizon company store. I decided to go the Verizon company store, since I travel and wanted the option of going to a Verizon store if I had any issue. At that time, all the prices were the same.
