Help an an app version be saved?

I really liked google maps before they updated it and ruined it. fortunately, I was able to 'revert' back to my current version.

Why the heck would they remove the ability to access your own maps that you have created? (...it works... lets break it! <google development>)

QUESTION: can I save the app version I currently have, so that if it gets updated with an OTA or by mistake, I can re-install it?

Apps like App Monster will save the current version of the app so you can install it later. (Maps isn't the only one that later versions broke good apps.) You can save multiple versions and restore whichever one you want.

Certain apps that are Pro/Paid for can't be backed up unless you're rooted (unless Helium works for this, too). E.g., TuneInPro, EndomondoPro, ...

Well App Monster is useful, but 'Maps' does not appear in the menu of apps to back up... :(

perhaps I'll have to root first for it to appear?
