Root an Epic user asked to root a Evo for friend

so I am using the Epic and EXT4 with midnight rom and its been like 2 weeks of reading all sorts of things to get this far

I know I can figure out the root for my friend on his Evo and install the cyanogenmod for him

he has no idea how to do these types of things and I am wondering if I am going to have to constantly be messing with his phone to update things and change whatever because of something - they are running "nightly builds" over there at cyanogenmod and I dont want to deal with that

all he wants is an Evo with all the bloat ware off and crap like that but really most of the stock things that are there he wants just a faster phone and all this crap running everywhere

whats my best course of action - should I update him to 2.3 with cyanogenmod or some other 2.2 rom thats faster then stock - no overclocking unless its proven to not kill battery life and over heat the phone ever

It kind of depends on the reason for rooting. If he just wants to use free wifi tether, then just rooting will give him access to that. 2.3 roms are all beta still and have bugs and stuff not working. I would stick with 2.2 roms and let him look at the threads for each to find the one he thinks he likes. I have rooted Epics and Evos. In my opinion, Evos are much simpler but that is where I started. Any questions, feel free to ask. There are many here that are willing to help. I would suggest if you havent already reading the Rooting for Dummies guide a couple times stickied at the top. It is very good and has step by step instructions.

Here is a list of the roms that most on here recommend. I would stick with a Sense Roms as they all have everything working and are the least maintenance.

I guess the rooting isnt really my problem - he wants it for the wifi tether

but the custom rom would be to remove all the sprint crap that he dont want like the sprint zone and blockbuster app and things like that - on the epic its the sprint zone, nfl, and some other apps that are always running

so I guess the question is whats the best rom thats the easiest to use and had the least problems and most stable on 2.2

my other friend in another state has the cyanogenmod with 2.3 and he said there arent any problems he has and I should just go that route

I dont want to get all into this because I will never have this phone so I really dont want to get things confused in my head when I am doing things to my Epic and mess something up because I thought it was like that but it was actually the Evo that I do that for

Fresh, Myns Warm twopointtwo, Kings, Koni Elite, and Mikfroyo are all custom roms with all the junk removed. Another option is to have him download Titanium Backup once rooted and freeze the sprint apps. He would then still be on the stock rom(but rooted) and not have the sprint stuff to deal with. If you are not going to be around the phone alot, I would also have him read up on this stuff in case for some reason he does something to his phone and needs it fixed. I would stay away from CM7 as it is still beta though most things work but it is not a final release yet so there are more things to come with it.

Yea, you don't need a custom rom to remove anything. As the post above said, ti backup allows you to freeze apps, and I use root manager to backup and remove anything I don't want

You have to be careful on removing things though as some of them the system depends on to run correctly. I would freeze them first to make sure there are no issues then if there are none, you can remove or rename them.

with my epic the roms that are out there have to have the hot spot still in there because it messes things up if removed - so all the custom roms have it in there (as far as I can tell) so I would assume that the Evo is the same way, why would people make a rom that has something missing thats needed

so thats why I would rather go with a custom rom rather then removing or freezing things - all that crap should be taken care of for me, right?

Yes. Almost all(I haven't tried everyone) of the 3.70 based Sense roms have everything working and the useless sprint bloatware removed. They do have them on the sdcard so that if you by chance want one or two of the apps installed you can install them easily.

Some do not have the hotspot app installed but rather use wifi tether for root. Some do have the hacked hotspot(Mikfroyo is one that comes to mind).
