An honest review

Before we dig into my opinion of the phone, I'm going to give a bit of background information. My first and only smart phone before this one was the Samsung Galaxy Indulge. I really enjoyed this phone when I first got it, but the thrill quickly died down, I began to realize and notice the issues the phone had. It lacked a sufficient battery life, it had weird screen / touch / sensitivity issues at times, it had horrible hard-drive space, it had a headphone jack/port that broke within a week, and it had speakers that couldn't match even half of what my friend's speakers were reaching.

I typically only used my phone for a few games, internet browsing when absolutely needed / craved, and when ever I had to text / call. The one good thing I can say about the phone, is that it had a keyboard AS WELL as a touch screen, something I've never seen before on a phone before. So, let's dig into the LG Motion 4G

THE GOOD:

1) It has a 1.5 ghz dual core snap dragon processor, don't let the specs on most websites fool you, this phone ACTUALLY has 1.5, NOT 1.2 ghz! This is the exact same thing as the Samsung Galaxy S3!

2) It has a freaking awesome camera! It may not be top-notch like the S3 or the iPhone 5, but it's definitely up there. The audio quality seems to be better than the S3 from what I can tell! With this it has a front side camera for face time, face-recognition-locks, and the like.

3) It has Ice Cream Sandwich, to be honest I'm not sure if it will upgrade to jelly bean, maybe it already can and I just didn't know about it :P.

4) It has a headphone-jack that works... at least for now! Seriously, I didn't know how amazing it is to have a music-player! I've had an ipod before but I never listened to music on it, just played games, I went ahead and installed an app called GTunes Music and now have a crap ton of free music that I put on shuffle and work-out to (Working out used to be boring and it felt so long, not anymore!).

5) Great Display overall, even though it does not have the 4.8" screen that the S3 has, 3.5" is fine, especially when you take into consideration the fact the iPhone 3g + 4s have the EXACT SAME SCREEN SIZE! The pixel-quality is pretty low compared to most phones, so this will be one of the "bads" I'll bring up, but it all looks really crisp on the phone, it's not blurry. In fact, you might even pick up this phone and think it's high-def.

6) Very customizable. Perhaps this is part of the Ice Cream Sandwich kicking in, but everything on this phone is so easy to customize through the settings. The home and lock of one Motion 4G can vary so much from another.

7) The speaker on this phone outshines the speaker on the Indulge by quite a bit, but I haven't had it long enough to compare it to other people's phones, so whether or not it's up-to-bar with most phones around this time is unknown to me, but the fact it's better than my previous phone is good enough for me.

THE BAD:

1) This phone is somewhat cheaply made, my main fear was another broken headphone jack/port malfunction upon purchase, I went two years without any music! But instead of that, I had a different problem, a power jack/port problem! It somehow became loose, and I brought it to the MetroPCS store nearby and they said they couldn't do anything to it because they were able to pull a charge with their chord, though they had difficulty at first. So I'm stuck with a phone that has a slightly-bent power jack/port, this isn't a problem, so long as the phone isn't moving around so much whilst charging. But I imagine if I had it plugged into a car-recharger, it would become annoying.

2) Low pixels. 320x480, a lot of the phones now a days have 960x640 screens, and the S3 has a 1280x720 screen, if you held these phones up against it, you could probably quite easily tell the difference.

THE TEST:

I went ahead and ran an app called Quadrant Standard. This app benchmarks phones, and I found that my phone scored around a 5400, according to the charts the S3 scored around a 5700. This means my phone is ~5% off! Now let's be a little realistic though, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a bigger screen and a better resolution, this means that it is forced to work harder to produce an image, and it has a better battery and camera over all. Due to this, the phone is probably ~30-35% better. Would you pay ~300% more, for a phone that is only ~30% better? I'd hope not.

Nice review. I too fear breaking headphone ports in any device, including my old Ipod Classic. I rarely use my phone for music with headphones because of this exact fear. I'm thinking about buying a stereo Bluetooth headset to remedy this fear.

Not to knock the lil phone that does, but it wont measure up to the S3 or even the GNexus. And I can almost guarantee you its not the same caliber cpu in the S3, but we wont debate on that one. Where the S3 beats the motion w/o even breaking a sweat is its gpu and display. Why do those matter you may ask, go dl Nova from the store and play it on both devices and you will see the difference. Watch a movie on both devices and see the difference. Storage space, S3 wins again hands down, battery, again S3 wins.. again.

And most importantly...... root, ROMs & kernels galore for the S3.

Now like I said tho, I'm not knocking the Motion, for $100 - $149 is one hell of a bang for your buck and for once a up to date chipset. Its said they cut corners on it, but my guess is they were going after a price bracket. Which the nailed on the head TWICE. Its the best lowend device out. ;)

I'm gonna splurge on it! The GS3 that is. Motion for sale soon!

I agree with your review. The only thing I would add is that on my phone the back case sounds a little loose when I pick it up.

Yeah I have to agree with you there. I have mine a Metro gel case all the time so just now I took it out of the case to test it. I do notice it feels and sounds loose and kind of "cheap" quality to it when I lightly twisted the phone.

Well, the case makes it feel very solid and makes it easier to hold on it.

you can't really compare the two devices they are priced completely different and I thought the s3 and motion had the same exact processor which is the latest dual core s4 one 8960 I believe the ram is what gives the s3 the boost

They both use the Qualcomm snapdragon msm8960 and Adreno 225

i am the double edged sword with this one. I use bt almost exclusively so breaking the port is out of the equation.

however the bt battery drain AND charging the bt adapter....

/best buy ever - plantronics backbeat - looks a little goofy, but I paid 40 bucks for them and have used them for 7 phones over the last 5 years or so.

bad ass music audio - not so great phone audio, but who uses their phones for phone calls anymore?

I use my Motion through LG 730 Bluetooth Headset mostly at home when I dont want to carry phone around with me all the time. The call quality is great. When out and about I rarely use it.

Sterlin22, on your hosed up plugs.

Look and see if you have an independent phone repair place in your area. Even piddlya** Slocala has a couple. The power and audio plugs aren't that hard or expensive to replace.

I WOULD take a pic of the face of the phone before you drop it off though. I had a power port replaced on my DX and they chipped the screen doing it that killed my camera and main led light. I didn't notice this til hours later after I got home and KNEW the place would swear they didn't crack it. If I had thought to take a pic before taking it in I would have had them by the short hairs but I didn't.
