Amazing! You rock NOMster! I joined the forum just to say thanks.
I'm a noobie, have had the phone for 2 days now. This is one of things I wanted to do.
Many thanks once again.
 
No problem. I also read on another forum where there is a widget on the market that will do the same thing. I haven't used it because I already found this and i used quick settings anyway and dont Need another space taker.
 
Well I thought it worked, my hubby's BB was showing it as awifi option, BUT as soon as it starts the hotspot, it shuts off my 3G, so things can connect to my phone but there's no data to connect to.
 
Worked like a charm! Even my GenTouch tablet works on it, which has given me problems connecting on other phone tethers. Thanks!
 
Tried this method on my Optimus S, and the Wireless network shows up on my laptop and iPod Touch, but when I try to connect it connects with Limited Connectivity message, and will not browse the web.

Help, any ideas??

That's a no go, tried it 3 more times, each time I can connect to the hotspot, but cannot get to websites, on iPod Touch it says error message saying it can't reach webpage because it's not connected to the Internet...but it it is obviously connected to the Hotspot SSID.

Any other thoughts?
 
Just got my Optimus last week. My phone sits quietly on my desk waiting for me to make or take a call. I am listening to some great rock at Pandora with my previously unconnected ITouch. My also formerly unconnected Netbook is busy with some overdue software updates. Thank you!
 
All this app does it turn the tethering option on, no different than going into the settings without the app and doing it yourself.

Using this app makes zero difference about what is happening.
 
Download "Hotspot Widget" and it will do the same. No other settings to configure, just a simple widget that you add to your screen. Once activated you can configure your hotspot with WPA2 PSK security, you will need to go under your notification bar to set it up. Works for me, if I go to the standard menu to activate my portable hotspot I get "Network is unavailable". This widget does the trick.

It makes a $30 difference in what is happening. It allows you to activate and use the mobile hotspot option without paying the fee Sprint charges.
 
I just picked up a optimus s and love it so far. I Down loaded the Quick settings and followed the instructions and all i could get when trying to turn on the hot spot was network unavailable. I opened, closed the program quit a few times, Rebooted the phone 5-6 times and still got the same error.
I down loaded the hot spot widget and started it,and it's working. Not sure why, but working. Thanks for the help.
 
Just Got the phone Optimus S today and loving it so far, first android phone, thanks for this really appreciated.

guess what? if you try to go into settings and turn it on...nothing happens. go ahead and try it. it will give a "network unavailable" error.

I've been tethering in the past, not often, but no charges. I have been doing so since owning my Hero over a year ago, it was then rooted, but now the Optimus (non-rooted) and it's the same thing. No charges...as msc43283 said earlier, it bypasses the key so you can activate and use the mobile hotspot without paying the charges.

There are other apps that does this as well for the rooted phones, such as "aNetShare" or "Wireless Tehter for Root Users". "Hotspot Widget" is the only one that I know for unrooted that is in the Market that was made for this and is pretty straight-forward. It works the same way.
 
I am new to these forums. can someone post the link to the market place? I went to the Apps section on this site but could not find 'quick settings'.

I downloaded the hotspot widget but it wont show up. The one buy herman Muller....
