Android 2.0 Video Player

Need one. Can't believe there isn't anything native to the phone.

The phone displays dvd quality video, so why can't I view dvd resolution rips in divx/m4v etc?

Thus far I've tried:

Act 1 Video Player
Video Player

All play audio, but won't play video at 720 x 480.
(Dvd rips of Futurama Seasons I have)

Give Meridian Video Player a shot. Not sure it will work, but I've heard good things about it in general.

No go.

Says video size is too large.

Seriously? What's the point of having a screen capable of viewing dvd quality video, with nothing to play it at launch?

Frustrating to say the least. Don't want to re-encode all my media.

Sorry about that, I'm sure support will hit soon, but it does seem to defy belief that Google failed to cook support for the resolution into 2.0 when they clearly knew the resolution that would be offered by the Droid.

I just noticed this!

if you enter the camera and view what photos and videos you've taken the movies you've loaded will be playable in there.

Im watching the office right now.

Nimijneb,

Did you have to put the videos in any particular folder on the phone?

I used DoubleTwist and it automatically made folders in the root of the SD card.

"Music" and "Video" are the folder names.

I would try making those folders on the SD card and copying files to it.

Very cool thanks.

Incidentally I think the issue isn't with the resolution, but with the file ext.
Using Astro file manager, I navigated to the file, and clicked to play.

It opened with a default video player, again played the sound, but no video.
When I checked the properties of the file, it said .m4v unrecognized.

Which blows ass imo. gotta re-encode ALOT of shit now. LOL

winmo had the same lack of playback formats. but coreplayer would play almost anything on it even high bitrate divx files. it looks like they were planning to release it for Android but I am pretty sure they suspended dev in it due to some Android limitation. Again... lack of multimedia capabilities on these new devices is inexcusable.

Hi, I'm the creator of Act 1 Video Player and I have some stuff you all might be interested in knowing.

For devices with large screens, the Android documentation states that "legacy" apps (those compiled for 1.5 or older) or apps that don't specifically state support large screens will essentially be "zoomed" to fit devices with larger screens. I know that Act 1 still works in the Android emulator with a large screen, and it does get zoomed. So it theoretically should work on the Droid.

However, video playing often does not work the same on a device as it does in the emulator. Maybe Droid is having trouble with the zooming for videos, or maybe it's just too slow (video playing already takes up a lot of CPU).

I'm going to spend some time updating Act 1 to support large screens and maybe that will help. If anyone with a Droid would like to help test the app, I'll refund you the cost of Act 1 (and you get a better video player!).

Please check the Act 1 home page: http://www.hyperaware.com/android/video-player/ and email me from there if you're interested. I'd like to get this done by the end of this weekend.

Don't forget to encode your videos at the lowest acceptable bitrate for best performance! Mobile devices are slow and limited!

I'm using Meridian Video Player to view 854x480 (Droid's native resolution) videos. H264 MP4s with AAC audio, encoded using Handbrake.

Actually all you need to do is just rename the file by removing the .m4v to.mp4. It has worked for me.
