Android 2.1 / Moto Droid

You could look at at what the CEO of motorola said at CES...something along the lines of the droid getting 2.1 a few days after the SDK is released...so...deeznuts do your research.

“The day that launches, 2.1 will be available to us and we’ll upgrade the Droid to 2.1.”

--Sanjay Jha

EDIT: I believe there is another quote stating that it will come in a few days after the SDK drops

Interesting, since what you claim and what you quote are too different things...Jha never mentioned a timeline at CES.

furthermore...2.1 is not a major update...just a bit of a dressing up of the OS and some minor tweaks.

The version numbering scheme states otherwise, though what one would consider a "major" update is open to debate.

2.1, though, is not a service update, hence could be considered a "major" update. I guess calling it a re-flash would be appropriate as well

He said that Moto would receive the code from Google and commence work on it "in a few days," not that the update would be released to us then.

Exactly.

And people are forgetting that Verizon still needs to "approve" it for use on their network. Just because Moto optimizes it for use on the Droid, does not mean it goes straight to OTA.

Verizon needs to test any update on their network.

BAH there was a straight up interview with Jha somewhere where he said 2.1 would be out for droid merely days after the sdk dropped

Claiming there was a "straight up interview" and posting an actual reference to it are too different things. All the citations about what Jha mentioned relayed that the Droid would be updated to 2.1, but no timeline exists yet.

I have no problem coming out and admitting I was wrong - but no where have I seen a quote from Jha stating what you claim.

If you can find it, please post it. It would be welcomed news (and I'll admit publicly I was wrong)

And yes, I too would like to be optimistic, but I'm a realist as well.

As for January 22, I believe that date was released a few months back as being the second service update. Though they could try to rush 2.1 to that date instead and skip the whole service update.

I did say few weeks at best, though I would not be surprised if it took longer.

January has another service update slated for release - any "major" upgrade, such as 2.1, will likely come after that

Besides, what did you think later this year means? November? If I had to guess, based on service releases and upgrades of past, a few months tops. That would put any major upgrade around Q2
Moto Europe said 2.1 would be on the Milestone in less than two months. That phone is about a month behind the Droid in the update cycle. Moto US said the Cliq would get 2.1 in Q1, and according to Moto, the Cliq Rom will take longer than the Droid one because of the MotoBlur modifications. I imagine we'll get it late January or early February.

Here is the interview. A quick sitdown with Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha -- Engadget

jha says quote, "The day that launches, 2.1 will be available to us and we'll upgrade the Droid to 2.1. So the software feature sets will be available completely to us."

So by that quote...motorola is updating the droid immediately and then pushing it to Verizon to accept. My guess is Verizon takes two weeks. I'm still sticking with the 22nd.

I think they'll try to do this all together rather than pushing out a service update and then pushing out 2.1.

I realize two weeks is a bit longer than the 22nd but I think verizon will try to move quickly with their flagship device

Wow! You truly are an optimist. I hope you are right.

Yes, 2.1 along with all its software features will be available to moto. But that does not mean it will be ready to update right away. It still needs to be optimized for use on the droid (ie code changes) and that is not going to be done in days.

Verizon does not have a good record in getting updates out for their phones in a timely manner. 2 weeks sounds great, but I would not hold my breath.

But I hope you are right my friend. Motorola needs to do this quickly yet correctly in order to get itself back into the mobile phone marketplace. Otherwise, it truly will be dead in the water with all the new android phones coming to market this year.

Well what about the speed in which 2.0.1 came out? Although i guess we did not know how long motorola/verizon were working to get this out.

What's the point of a service update right before a new OS release?

The second of two service updates was scheduled for January well before the talk of a 2.1 release date was mentioned.

there was an internal verizon memo leaked onto the internet that contained the bug fixes that were to be addressed in both the service updates.

EDIT: found it at http://phandroid.com/2009/11/09/motorola-droid-and-htc-droid-eris-ota-updates-coming-december-11th/

You will see the January 22 date listed for a second service update - thats where that date is coming from and is no where attached to a 2.1 release (as of Nov 2009)

However, that service update may never be released if moto can get 2.1 out or that date may reflect a 2.1 instead of another service update.

But again, as of November, January 22 was to be another service update

Only time will tell...

True but he means that there is no point to do a service update on an OS when a new version of the OS is coming out...

maybe.

Then again, depends on how moto feels about how soon they can release 2.1

Remember, that January 22 2010 service update was announced before moto had an idea regarding when 2.1 was to come out

With the release of 2.1, the meaning of January 22 can very well change

This is a good point as well. I just feel that if some modders can fool around with an image of 2.1 form the N1 and make it work on the droid so fast then I would hope that the people who do this for a living can do the same. I dunno maybe i'm talking outta my a$$

I've been applying hacks to my phones for a long time now and have come to learn that those who mod > those who program for big companies :D
