Android 2.2? The rumors begin!

Come on guys, lets be serious...no matter what firmware/upgrade google releases for their phones, no phone is ever going to get above any of the iPhones...I have a mytouch 3g and I use my iPhone 2G just for the fact that it's a whole lot faster, and come on..the apps on the android SUCK, playing games on it is like playing games on nintendo -_-
A simple firmware upgrade won't do them no good.

Based on this and your previous posts:
1-Your still using 1.5/1.6 and are now commenting on a 2.2 thread
2-Maybe an iPhone is more appropriate for your needs.

You're*
And yeah I'm on 1.6 rooted, to be honest, buying this mytouch was the worst decision I've ever made...Should have bought a blackberry.

Why are you guys even still worrying about Android?
Everyone who's anyone knows that iPhone is still the King.
And once multi-tasking comes out in iPhone OS 4.0, Android won't have anything over Apple.
Android is soon to be even more dead in the water than it already is.
Yeah and the iPhone 4 can't be hand held without loosing or severely limiting your connection to AT&T. They placed the antenna where it comes in contact with the skin--which detunes it. I think iPhone has just been dethroned by some crappy RF/antenna engineering! The greatest apps in the world don't matter when you can't connect!

I heard this actually only happens to people who hold their phone with their left hand.

And why is everyone saying no phone will ever beat the iphone? There's already a few with better specs, and in my opinion better features.

Evo 4g either beats or matches the iphone 4 in every way but one, and that's battery life. Which isn't that bad if you know how to use it right. Not to mention the microUSB charger. I already had 3 ways to charge my phone without even buying a new charger.

...and if you run out of juice you can change out the battery. iPhone??? iPhone??? (crickets chirping).

He's absolutely right. Except that... oh the iPhone is EXCLUSIVELY (which is killing the iPhone) on "America's fastest network", AT&T. Which renders the iPhone into a iPod touch with a $70/month fee! Then you can show off to all your friends how successful you are since you can blow $70/month on absolutely nothing over their iPod touch.

So let's see what the iPhone can do
-voice calls? nope... unless you're on wifi and have skype
-facetime? only on wi-fi, you must be dreaming if you think it will be on 3g
-surfing the web? hells no! Only on wi-fi because 3G is worthless
-Google maps, GPS- nope.... need a connection, unless you have wifi.
-all those gorgeous apps like redbox, chase, fandango? Worthless because you need a WORKING NETWORK... unless youre on wifi- see a pattern?
-games- it owns android because iPhone users need something to do while they wait for the 3G network and they need something to destress with.

The whole grip of death this is bunk. It's the network. Even if the antenna was hidden like other phones, the iPhone would still be a iPod Touch because AT&T sucks.

My advice? Save a few grand and just get a iPod touch or iPad wi-fi only if you want the Apple experience. I am a moderate among fanboys- Both platforms are good, it's what you prefer- Android or iOS. But the network is what will push Android ahead of the iPhone.

Anyways, back to the original topic:
2.2 in the summer is a pipe dream for me, I have the original Droid. All the efforts will be on Droid X and Droid 2. If I don't have 2.2 by October then I'll be upset.

Hi guys, this is my first ever android post and I am a relatively new HTC hero user so please forgive my ignorance if my questions appear inane.

I've looked online and read some tech news and it seems like froyo will only be made available free for the newer phones either preinstalled or via an OTA update once it comes out (everyone holding their breaths). Reports suggest that HTC Hero will not be one of the lucky ones.

Question: if not available for free, is it possible to pay for the upgrade, or failing that, install it by rooting?

Hero gets too cluttered once apps are downloaded thus slowing it down. With froyo, we can download apps to sd card and free up phone.

Otherwise, better write off this phone and beg an upgrade from my mobile provider.

Any advice anyone?

I vaguely remember that Google said that they will only update Android phones to FroYo if they were made after the beginning of 2010 (or late 2009). I believe the HTC Hero is only upgraded to Eclair (2.1)

What you CAN do is root your phone and use a custome ROM with Froyo on it.

If you root your phone, you can have Apps2SD :)

Thank you my friend. That was helpful. I got my hero this February but guess that it would be from the 2009 batch. Rooting a phone sounds complex and risky from reading several comments re: errors, side effects (if I can use that term) and warranty issues - but if it means a speedier phone - may be worth it.

I'll wait for my OTA T-Mobile Android 2.1 update, see how that works and then see whether I want to go 2.2 root route

Stay Happy Folks :p

NP, there are a lot of HOW TO root for the Hero. Do your research (Youtube, XDA, other sites). When you feel confident, then go and root your phone. There's a big Hero community on the net, so if you get into problems, you should be able to find help :)
