I have heard that the Thunderbolt comes with 2.2. If I buy this, is there a way to upgrade to 2.3 (or higher) without rooting the phone? Could I ask for an upgrade when I get my phone (I know you can get the OS upgraded on feature phones [non-smartphones]). Thanks!

I didn't know about OTA updates, thanks everyone!
Yeah they come slowly and usually if you root you have acess to the OTA's before the non rooted users. Yes you may void you warrenty but it's a lotta fun to be able to make your phone "your" phone
I know what rooting a phone is, and I use linux on some of my home computers, but I was wondering... how hard is it to root a phone like the thunderbolt? What can you do with a rooted phone that you cant do with a non-rooted phone?
If you can follow directions, rooting is pretty easy for the TB. I think there are some "automated" rooting tools for the TB, but I just use the step-by-step and do it myself. I wouldn't be surprised if there will eventually be a "one-click" executable that can root your phone for you (there was for my previous Android).
There are many reasons why someone would want to root. Here are just a few:
-Install custom ROMs/kernels
-Install OEM leaked ROMs
-Access "hidden" features(FREE tethering)
-Remove bloatware
-Enhanced customization
-Additional applications
--there are apps that require root (Titanium Backup, Screen Grabber, etc.)

Edit: Before rooting and installing custom ROMs/kernels, I would play around with your phone for a while so you are familiar with how the OEM software works. This will help you appreciate the custom ROMs an addition to spotting any anomalies.
Not if you're rootedCouldn't I get charged for the free tethering? Can't they track that?
