Help android 2.3, 3.0, gingerbread? confused a bit

so I've read over the last two days that the galaxy s can have gingerbread on it and that xda developers have released some versions of it, but I've read that it is v2.3 (but called ginger bread all the same) then I read another article that it's 3.0. so I'm understanding that gingerbread is 3.0, so why do some call it 2.3?

also, what are the benefits of updating to gingerbread? what might be the drawbacks? (app compatibility?)

and finally, I think I read that samsung is planning to roll out an update to gingerbread too, so is it worth rooting to update for the average user our should we just wait on samsung?

If you don't even know the names of different Android versions (3.0 is honeycomb), you probably shouldn't be flashing your phone with an unofficial version of Gingerbread (2.3.2 is what's currently leaked)

ah ok. so gingerbread is 2.3? I got the names mixed up. I guess I can wait for the official release and save the hassle of rooting my phone.

Gingerbread is 2.3. Honeycomb is 3.0

The reason for the mix up is because when Google first leaked the codename Gingerbread, no one really knows what the version number is going to be. Then someone leaked that Google is working on 3.0, so everyone assumed that 3.0 is going to be Gingerbread.

Then come the google conference where they dropped the bomb called Honeycomb, and declared that 3.0 is honeycomb, but gingerbread is actually 2.3

Of course, since it's the internet, nobody bothers cleaning up all the false info floating out there.

So?

Is 2.3 out in the UK or not? Ive managed to update 2.2 through KIES but so far nothing has shown up in KIES.

A work colleague of mines has just purchased an HTC Desire last week and it came with 2.2 also.

Currently the only phones that have 2.3 are the Nexus S and I think the Nexus One. No other phone has it, but I believe HTC and Motorola will be rolling it out soon, Samsung who knows.

Samsung already leaked an alpha 2.3 rom, so for all you haters out there, the galaxy s is the first eclair phone with an official gingerbread update.

har better copy and paste?! I wonder if you can actually select text from anywhere in 2.3? that would almost be worth rooting alone.
