Root Android 2.3 Update fail

I am trying to update to Android 2.3 and am getting an update fail. It downloads, then on reboot the progress bar fails about 25% of the way through. I have rooted my phone with superuser. I uninstalled it but have no success getting the update. Anyone have any luck with a rooted phone?

Same problem for my wife's phone. Someone else said they had to go back to stock 2.1 and then the update chain worked. Haven't tired it since it's my wife's phone and she doesn't want to wipe it again.

you have to odin a stock tar file to your phone. has to be the STOCK tar file.
hate to tell you this but you should have NEVER rooted.

Has this process been successful? I can find a lot of posts online regarding difficult upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2., but don't see much for 2.2 to 2.3

Are there any directions online where to grab the stock file and the process? I haven't used ODIN in a while

I used SamsungPST lite to install 2.2. It appeared to hang so I let it sit for about 20 minutes and did a battery pull. It came up and looked like it was running a few scripted things and then returned me to a stock 2.2. screen.

Don't wipe EFS or you'll lose your EVDO and won't be able to install the OTA update. EFS holds the EVDO encryption data. If you do or somehow lose data again, you'll need a spare verizon phone to activate using your number (dial *228 and follow the prompts) and then do the same on your Fascinate and you'll regain data.

Here are the instructions that I used, just make sure to ignore the wipe EFS part completely or you'll have to do the double activate trick above:
