Root Android 2.3

Can this newer Android 2.3 be installed on the Eris? Has anyone created a ROM for this version? What's the latest?

punk.kaos of KaosFroyo fame took the code from the Android 2.3 SDK and built a quick build that runs. It is not complete, but 2.3 source was recently released so there should be some more builds as Cyanogen works on it as well, and the latest version appears to be much better. I personally wouldn't run my phone on this all day, but it's fun to play with for a while,

See [GINGERBREAD] KaosGingerbread V5 - xda-developers Read through the thread to see what works and what may not.

There are ROMs out there for gingerbread on the eris but they are not very smooth or stable (at no fault of the developer). The eris is just not quite powerful enough to successfully run gingerbread.

If you must have gingerbread then i would suggest a more powerful phone.

I don't think that this is correct. The hardware requirements for Gingerbread are no different from Froyo (ignore the rumors that came out several months ago - they were wrong.)

As I said in my post above, Gingerbread development is early, and developers have had little chance to optimize code or perfect code libraries. Patience is a virtue.

Well anything is possible with a good developer and a lot of work. There may be a few good gingerbread roms for the eris in the future. I just do not think all the great new features of gingerbread can run on the eris. Not just the stock OS but other apps that integrate into it like Maps 5.0. The hardware just isn't up to snuff.
